Arizona RANK System

I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Arizona's ranking system but it used to be something like this:
I'm a 6. If I played a 9 he would have to win 6 games to win the set . I would have to win 3. If he were an 8 then he would have to win 5 games to win set . I would have to win 3. If he were a 7 then he would have to win 4 games to win set. I would have to win 3. You'll notice here that 3 is the minimum number of games you must win to win a set. This method was not too bad. And I occasionally could be a threat to the better players
But the ranking czars, in the vastness of their wisdom have changed the rules. I am rewriting this because previously I had included a lot of effing insults here but I don't want the idiots to think I disrespect them.
They have decided to drop everybodies rank one notch. Brilliant.
So now I'm a 5. If I play an 8 (was a 9) he would have to win 5 games to win the set. I would have to win 3. If I played a 7 ( was an 8 ) he would have to win 4 games to win the set. I would have to win 3. If I play a 6 we would play even up.
You see, they did not change the rule that you must win a minimum of 3 games to win a set !!!! Obviously they thought that we weaker players should spot the stronger players one on the wire!
Have you seen that commercial where the man takes away the red
truck from the little boy and gives him a cardboard one and the boy looks up with arms spread and says, "This is a piece of junk." ?
Well here I stand with my mouth dropped opened and my arms spread.

I personally think they slapped every one that was on the committee in over the last decade and told them they didn't know what they were doing. Been in AZ for 11 years and it stands as the most stupid thing I seen happen in Arizona pool.

I think making the Nines, Eights was a BAD more for the old Sevens, Sixes, and Fives. As it put WEAK "A" Players in the Eight's and Under Tourney's, making it hard to place, as you are now against the old NINES.

Some Bars also adjusted their tourney's down to deal with the NEW NUMBERS.

Your spotting the stronger players a game? Sounds like you are still getting 2 on the wire to a very short race. How about trying to get better and go up in ranking and then you can take advantage of the new ranking system? Sorry, I'm not a big fan of handicapped tournaments and in my area we now have tour that is handicapped. There is too much subjectivity in establishing accurate handicaps for one and it also doesn't reward a person for getting better.

I have played competitive pool for around 20 yrs now and I have learned one thing. The greatest thing about becoming a champion is you are no longer the rack boy. When you play better players heads up that is how you can judge your own game. I have heard players brag when they beat a better player but they forgot to tell everyone that they were getting 3 in a race to 5.

agreed!!! I've been in the APA for about 7 years....the only version of the APA I see that I like is Masters where everybody has the same rank and it's a race to 7. I don't care if I get my butt kicked every week...but at least I know I'm playing a particular guys speed on any given night and he isn't screwing around. The other nights have lost their appeal due to the ranking system...winning only feels good when it's straight up.

Hey your both from Lizard Acres, do you guys match up? As for Kolbys tournaments the lowest we go rating wise is a 6, if your lower then that you can play but the set minimum is 3 and the max 5. In the Sunday tournament which is an 8 and under the 8's go to 5 with the 7's to 4 and 6's and under to 3 games.

In Tuesday's tournament we do not go lower then a 6 either, but if your playing Scott Frost you get the 6 out if your a 6 or below so tell me that is not a fair game. Mitch would be giving those 6's the 7 out and a game I believe. I would be giving the 6's the 7 ball.

It seems that people do not want to get better, if your a 5 then you really are not playing pool at a competitive level at all. A 5 cannot run 4-5 ball regularly and are D players perhaps low C players. 6's are low C to a C, the 7's are high C to low B players with the 8's being B to B+ players, if your a 9 your an A player with 10's being open players. Scott is a 10-2 being a pro, Mitch is a 10-1, not sure who else is a 10-1 but a 10-1 IMO would be shortstop speed.

IMO you guys who are 5's should just play better so you can become a 6. I think if your a 9 or above your game is respected, as a 7 or 8 you can have your moments. To put it into perspective Angel Paglia is a WPBA pro and is an 8. I am just trying to give people an idea of what the rating system is like compared to ABCD that is used in more places.

The rooms have seen more people playing tournaments IMO, Kolbys gets 32 or more weekly at the Tuesday night 9 ball. I think you have more of the former 8's and 9's playing in the 8 and 7 and under tournaments so now you have bigger fields, it might be unfair in your eyes but now the tournament has perhaps 5-10 more players then before. This past Tuesday we had a 13 year old young man who is a 6 win the whole tournament with many good players in the field of 32.

I just think you need to dig deep and just get out and play with the better players, you realize you need to make less mistake and miss less shots along with playing better position and safes. What your saying is you do not want to improve but get more weight to have a chance, it is like the guy who is playing bad and keeps asking for more weight/adjustments every set, play better.

Sorry Guys,

Just had to have a short laugh at this thread. Years ago when my company represented Rockford Fosgate in Tempe, I stopped by a pool room on Scottsdale Road near Camelback. Stopped by the counter. Asked for a table. The counter person asked if I wanted a game. Sure. Whats your number? What number? Aren't you an Arizona player? No, I'm from New York. You got no games here! I almost fell over. Never realized AZ billiards was so structured. Haven't been back in years.

You went to the wrong room Lyn, at Kolby's most will still play you even if you do not have a rating. I think in Arizona it is weird because people do match up based upon that which makes it hard for others to creep up on someone but also can hinder someone bringing their game so to speak. When I was in NY you matched up and took a chance, you would find out if the game was good or not the old fashioned way.

FAST LENNY be friends with a banger

FAST LENNY, frankly I'd just as soon dump the rankings systems completely But since they exist I'm going to try to get the best deal I can. I moved from L.A. some time ago. There were no ratings systems there. I can live with out them. If I don't feel strong enough for a tournament and don't want to blow my $ I won't enter.
Fact is I would love to play in Lenny's Christmas round robin. but it does not make sense for me to drop $50.00 against that field. I respect their skills too highly. If I'm going to go up against that caliber player I want to do it head to head to learn new skills. Of course Scott Frost is absurd!
FAST LENNY, I have heard nothing but good things about you and appreciate all you have done for pool. You seem like the kind of a guy I can learn from.
I don't have a lot of money to entice you but how about 9-ball , race to 10 for $50.00, you spot me 7 out on 9-footers and I can only promise you one race but at least I'll get to play a minimum of 10 games with you. It would be worth every penny to me. By the way , my rating right now is a 5.:thud:

Pool in the valley is the most organized I've seen anywhere. Maybe the whole state got busted by a roadie in the prehistoric days, so all the bars decided to keep books on everybody.

When I first got to Scottsdale, I tried to get into a few tournaments at some local dives. They wouldn't let me play without a players card...I thought that was pretty ridiculous. I finally had to go down to Main Street and Jesse (I think that was his name) rated me...I've still got that card just in case I find myself looking to play a little bit in AZ. As far as I can tell, without the magic number, you're assumed to be a pro.

I've never seen anything like it before or since. You can ask people to gamble in Denver, San Antonio, San Diego, Las Vegas, Kansas City, etc without a problem. But when you ask someone to gamble in Phoenix, you get, "Well what are you rated?"

Lenny,

Please say hello to Tres Kane if you see him. We've gone around once or twice. Played Mitch in Vegas this year. He gave me way too many chances for a player of his caliber. Know a few other Phoenix players. Just don't get there anymore. Like you, the joys of retirement!

Pool is not all about gambling, and when it become that....I will quit play.......As to me it is about FUN.

But I will also not play to play just to be a RACK BOY, and ADD to a Pot I will never have a CHANCE at Winning.

Perhaps you need to believe in yourself and get the negative thoughts out of your head. Like I said with the kid who is 13 and a 6, he won at Kolbys, he beat a full field of 32 players, perhaps he has not been playing long enough to be conditioned or conditioning himself to be negative and think he cannot win. Bruce you might never have a chance at winning but you wont know until you try and change your attitude about it.

FAST LENNY read my post #12 this thread

FAST LENNY you and Cowboy are bogarting my thread!
Please read post #12 as it was meant for you. By the way, although Cowboy and I are familiar with each other and friendly we are totally independant on the forum. His thoughts are his and mine are mine.

Honestly Lenny I think between the NEW RATING Number were NINES are now EIGHT, and my NEW POOL ACCESSORY Picture Below I am pretty much done with competition in the Valley of the Sun.

A couple of year ago I use to drive over to Tempe on Sunday for the Big Table Eights and Under NINE BALL when Tracy was the TD. Best I ever did was a Second, and THIRD.

Last time I played in a Tournament was early May of 09, the NEXT DAY I got my NEW POOL ACCESSORY on my Right LEG, being Left Handed it interferes with LEG MOVEMENT.

So I think I will stay retired from Tournament Play until the Rating Committee Members, and Bar Owner all get on the same CHANNEL.

Beside honestly if you figure expense to get to an Event, Entree FEE, Drinks, etc. it is a loosing proposition in the big picture even if you will $100.00.
