How difficult is snooker compared to pools as in billiards ?

Both are different games- they just have common that there are balls and pockets. Some basics you can use (aiming etc)- the stroke and stance for example are totally different!
Snooker is more popular on TV because it s easier to understand- and so much easier for marketing- that s all in my opinion.

It really comes down to the fact that pool is more accessable than snooker, and I'm not referring to the ability to find places to play (although that is true depending on where you live).

Two people playing snooker for the first time will go perhaps 20 minutes without potting a ball that's not sitting over a pocket. Take the same two people and they will run 3-4 balls their first time playing pool.

I remember I hated snooker for a while, but played it now and then because I had the option at my university to play it $5/hr or pay $1.25 a game on bar tables. But all I wanted to do was run as many balls as I could, which didn't happen in snooker for me as I had a high break of around 20 at the time. But I later found Mordecai Richler "On Snooker" in the school library and his passion for the game was contagious.

As to which is harder, it really depends on what pool game you compare it to. Personally I think century in 14.1 is more difficult than a century in snooker. But I would say snooker is more challenging than 9 ball or 8 ball, it at least has more depth than those games.

Ratta...I disagree that the stroke and stance are different for snooker and pool. I have played snooker quite well (I've run centuries...HR 122...all using a normal pool cue), and I use no different stance or stroke. Both games are about potting balls, and gaining position to continue runs. Now, maybe you mean that most snooker players stand differently (more of an open, squared-up stance)...but that is not mandatory to play well. I agree that a "snooker stroke" is taught somewhat differently by snooker players, but, imo, it doesn't require any changes, as far as I'm concerned, from your basic pool stroke and stance.

Hi Scott,

i love to discuss about such *things* :) - i know some really good snooker players here- one of em is an extremly good instructor (played before changing to snooker very long time first league in pool- ). And from that what i ve seen i made my own thoughts and must say that i ve had the same mind after talkin to him. The most Snooker Players i know (good players) using their wrist at the end of the stroke. Even so they have a much *shorter* stroke (dunno how to say- imo they wanna make the CB dead or somethin like that).
I understand what you re talking about Scott- and like always keep everything in my mind :p

happy new year to you Scott,

ingo
