Two tricky shots

The two shots in the diagram were being discussed in another thread, but that seems to have gotten bogged down in metadiscussions.

Shot 1 is to make the 1 ball go backwards into the pocket. This shot depends mostly on the setup.

Shot 2 is to make the back ball of a spotted pair of balls straight into the corner pocket. This is a common situation at one pocket. How many ways can you come up with to do this? (On many tables, the third spotted ball is barely makeable by a "normal" shot, but the second is usually considered very difficult to impossible.)

2 rail bank on the 5.....jk..

my guess is that you are actually hitting the 4 first and a sort of double kiss on the 5 to make it.

Bob: On the first shot, you need the cb lined up with the two angled balls. ...
I think this might depend on the angle of the 1-2 with is 30-degrees or so with respect to the foot cushion.

I was able to make #1 both the way you show it and the way Neil said (which is the way Jay laid it out), I had better success with Jays setup but they both worked.

Thrilled to see a thread started like this. I would love to see more shots shared in this thread. I like the first shot and agree that it's way easier to make it with the cue ball lined up with the first two.

I had never seen the second shot and after caroming it several times I wanted more consistency.

Having read every book I've ever seen on pool and watched all the videos I could find I remembered something and now I can make it 10 out of 10 all day straight into the corner, no rails and without moving the first ball. One day a shot will come up that I can use this technique for.

Is it against the rules?

I remember shot #2.
On shot two, freeze the cue ball to the left side of the four, aim right between the four and five to make the five in the upper right corner. Jack up to make it a legal shot. The four ball will go in the corner pockets, by freezing the cue ball on the five and aiming between the five and four ball.

That's an interesting way. If you have cue ball in hand, it's not legal to freeze it to a ball. If the cue ball is not frozen on a (close) ball, it is not legal to stroke through (if you hit the cue ball twice). If the cue ball happens to come up frozen to the 4, then I think we have a possible shot, but it has to be frozen at the right angle and we have to be careful on the stroke if we want the shot to be legal (World Standardized Rules).

Pm me Neil and I'll tell you how I do it.

Cmon already with all the PM me stuff....It becomes an I will only tell who I want to tell....I have wasted my time PMing people in the past and all I got was a NO RESPONESE..

Why even take the time to post "PM Me" publicly...If you don't wan't to tell the public don't tell...(just send a PM in the first place....but don't rub it in the public face of everyone else

Sick and tired of this PM ME crap!!!!!!!!!

Merry X-mas

Well I was worried that I might get scrutinized like Freddy. But now that I think about it I shouldn't have a pool ego. Here is what I pmd Neil.

FYI I thought of this idea. Jay's is probably better but it might be the same.

legal version: when you get ball in hand for this shot or any similar shot just find the nicest chalk spot from the last break and put that spot of chalk as close to the object ball as possible without freezing them. Jack way up with outside English and throw it in.

Illegal version: with ball in hand rub a good chunk of chalk on the cue ball and repeat process.

If you just want to amaze your friends you can repeat the shot over and over again if you've rubbed a good spot of chalk on the cueball. Then rub it off and let them try.

if you want to share a secret with me that would be great.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks for sharing....sorry my rant came out at your expense.......It was building for years...I had spent about 45 minutes trying various ways to make this shot "consistently" I logged back on tonight in hopes of seeing a solution to the shot

The only way I could make it was to hit the front ball with a popped force follow with inside english which would nudge the bottom ball over just a bit and the CB would bounce back off of the front ball and then follow into the second ball sending it into the corner....Not very consistent way to make it...I did have the most success with a slightly elevated cue which would aid in the CB jumping off of the initial contact of the front ball..

It was only about a 1 in 10 shot....most would either under of over cut the second ball....or the CB would miss the second ball alltogether and rocket into the corner pocket...

Wow! That would be a 1 in 50 proposition for me but thanks for the idea that could be useful in various situations. Did the technique I shared work out for you?

Can someone else share another good shot? A totally different setup shot or hustle?

You may have seen this one, we use to do it long ago. You stand a nail up on its head, and freeze three balls evenly around it. Then you give them cue ball in hand and from at least two feet away they have to hit the balls and knock the nail over. The balls can not rebound of a rail and knock it over. Not as simple as it looks especially for a drunk or ball banger.

Another one, is to place a piece of paper on the table and put a ball in the center of it with a quarter laying on the very top of it, then with cue ball in hand, shoot the cue ball into it and make the quarter land off the paper. No jumping allowed.

My guess is that the slower you hit the shot...the better chance you have of making the quarter move off of the paper
