Just picked this up and trying to find out who made it. Sorry for the crappy photo.

Sure looks like John "Jack" Maddens initials to me. He posts here so you
might want to PM him with that pic. and see what he says. Good luck in
you search.

That was my guess also. I have one and the J and M look the same. But I have never seen anything but a date next to his initials.

You must have got it on trade, pawn shop, or a really good deal. Good luck, they play great. I hear his "Fiddle Back" shafts play great.

If you can't get reach Jack you may want to contact Tommy who is raffling off a few Maddens. He is very familiar with his cues.

It does play great. Two 30" shafts with ivory ferrules. One shaft has amazing wood, some o the tightest I've seen. 8 points with 4 veneers. Let's just say I got a really good deal. I love craigslist.

First off, let me apologize for the photos. I have a DSLR, but my computer is compromised at the moment.

With that out of the way, the one thing about this cue I'm not a fan of is the buttcap, it's stainless. It is growing on me. The forearm looks like an old prather blank. If this cue is a Madden, I doubt if he was doing 8 point, 4 veneered cues this early on.

I had one of the shafts cleaned up yesterday and was able to weigh the cue. Heavier than I thought. 21.1 oz. I've been playing with a Runde Schon that is 20.8oz and a Runde at 19.2oz before that. What is strange is the weight doesn't bother me. My Runde with 4.4oz shafts feel to heavy for me, but the Schon and this cue are fine. The thinner shaft, 12.15mm, I counted 30 growth rings at .820 inches. The normal shaft at 12.85mm has 16 growth rings. Both shafts have ivory ferrules.

The cue has no weight bolt, moves the ball quite well, transfers tons of spin and it stiff, but not too stiff. All in all this is a great cue. The hit is quite firm, old school hit. Very similar to a hoppe 2 piece and an old Palmer that I had.

I am not an expert on Madden cues, but I don't think it is his. His J & M are usually hooked together. Also since the M has a Flair to it the J might actually be a T with a flair. Just a thought. Like you, I like it ,but not the butt cap.

That is DEFINITELY a cue made by a good friend of mine, Joe McLaughlin, out of Everett Wa. He made a little over 100 cues in the late 90s/early 00s. He no longer makes cues so you have a real find there. Where did you get it? I can contact him for more info if you like. BB

Thanks for the info. Your friend knows how to make a great playing cue. I love this forum.
