Update on the Des Moines pool scene

The reason I bring up bad equipment is the fact that the racks will be inconsistent. You will almost never have the same rack twice. The whole basis behind pattern racking is a consistent rack. If you don't have that then you won't have the same pattern.

I'll give you that you may not get super consistent break patterns. But wouldn't you agree that unless the equipment/rack is exceedingly poor that you can still accomplish getting the 2 ball to the same end of the table as the 1 ball on most breaks? (or to an area friendly to where you are squatting the cb if you are making the 1 on the break) If you don't know where to put the 2 ball in the rack, this becomes a crapshoot. I know the bottom line is you still have to execute shots to get out. My take is that for A players and above it really lessens the game. (and for lower than A players like me it probably doesn't matter as much, so why do it?)

+1

The guys who can do it well can get those 2-3 balls doing the same or similar action on every break regardless of bad equipment.

I never have or never will pattern rack, learn how to do it, and hopefully it doesn't get to the point where I have to look for it in every match. It takes away from the enjoyment I get playing in matches/tournaments.

rep to you spimp, nice post.

I wanted to stay out of this entire debate, mostly because I am not involved in the DsM scene like I used to be.

To all the guys arguing that pattern racking is wrong, or presents an unfair advantage, I ask you this:
When it was not rack your own, did you ever...

A. During a 8-ball tournament or money game ever "shit rack" your opponent? for example, ever tilt the rack slightly based on which side the table they break from or above/below the foot spot based on if they broke from the side rail or in the break box?

B. During a 9-ball tournament or money game ever intentionally "pattern rack" your opponent by placing the 3 and 5 above the 9 with the 2 and 4 below the 9-ball? Which if you do a couple times, you will notice the 3/5 go up with the 1 and the 2/4 stay down table.

Just something to think about.

I have been doing B for years (over a decade) learned it from an old Mike Sigel video. For the record tho, I never intentionally did A, but had it done to me many times.

Do I feel wrong for Doing B? short answer no. If my opponent is running racks and i get to the table only to shoot a safety, I shoot the safety. Doing B, in my eyes is similar to that; Defense.

If you have done the above ever, you really don't have room to complain about someone try to giving themselves and "offensive" advantage.

my two cents.

At least people are talking about it now. I've never thought of racking the balls as an offensive or defensive opportunity. I'll just call safety next time I'm racking for someone and hopefully that means they cant check the rack.

I encourage people to make sure the game is fair at all times. If its not than make it fair. It's just not right.

onto other topics.

who from Des moines is going to Olathe in 2 weeks ?

2 weeks i will be going to the BCA tournament in MN. Atlantic is also that weekend, so might be tough getting anyone to go to olathe. I need to do this sometime though, since i've never been there, lol.

I would go, but I won't be back in Des Moines, til the second week of March at the earliest. Anything local or close by coming up next month?

1. If you do not support the tourney do not play. Start your own. You don't haveto play. Play in the 10 ball on fridays.
2. I have been to olathe 5-6 times since the rack your own and alt. Break came about and nobody has never complained about the rack.
3. If anybody can't see the hidden agendas of the people throwing the biggest fuss about this, you are kidding yourselves.
4. Most of these people are on ignore , so please stop quoting text
5. I would like to thank everybody who have supported pool in dsm rather then run it down.

have a great day.

I figured you would have a logical argument to be made. I went to pretty big lengths not to specifically call you out. I still like you Mike, just happen to like you much farther away from a pool table.

Have fun at league, heard you guys threatened to quit? Oh well, those are the breaks.

Have a great day also, thanks for the well wishes.

no I said I would rather take a 0 then play with somebody like you. Nice to see you can post here but when I try to call you at the exact same time you don't pick up.

check your post where you said you would only play if matt or paul could not play and you would never play to for anybody else. You have an agenda here mike, and everybody can see it. Look at the lengths you are going to prove your point. Calling Evelyn. I saw you last night trying to drum up support for your agenda. Maybe you should pick up your phone. I have tried to call 7-8 times in the last month

I don't answer the phone when I don't want to talk to people. It's my phone, as in it belongs to me, I'll use it however I want to. I clearly don't know the standard DSM etiquette, you see me all the time if you wanna talk pull me to the side.

I did say I would only play for Matt and Paul...you remember why I said that?

Cause YOU would not play for me! I don't even feel like going there because it's old news.

This isn't about them though. You know where this all started, it ain't been right since.

Hoping my rant is over.

no matt, this has been here awhile. Ever since farley couldn't get somebody to play jamie one night.. He thought it was because jamie was drink. Well mike had a badloss one night staking somebody when he was drink and nobody was watching out for him. Ever since then he won't pick up my calls or reply to my texts. Even though we have been friends almost since the day we got here. I am not sure what he is trying to accomplish but he is going to great lengths to get it done. Kinda weird and I hope someday in the near future him and I can laugh about. Cause I just don't get it.

p s point b of what big h said about racking in an order for your opponent is ok according to farley. What is the difference?

What i read was. (thoughts by me)

1. If you don't like what we do, play somewhere else. We're not gonna change. (fri 10ball has been getting the same ammount or more people then sundays)
2. Noone in olathe complains about my racks. (try winning it once)
3. Lets divert the attention from me and jody here real quick. ( You couldn't possibly do something wrong could you? )
4. I don't like to read anything someone says bad about me. ( Hi, i'm in high school still )
5. Thanks to those of you who kiss my ass, if you don't then piss off. (supporting pool in dsm is about more then the sunday tournament. what about all the fund raisers that you dont bother to go to ? what about the other tournaments during the week ? what about the jack/jills? what about all the leagues ? what about state tournaments ?)

Mike, if you feel the need. Don't call me either.

I am tired of listening to you defend yourself on the phone and act like some kind of saint. You sir are not.

To what other lengths will you try to make the sunday tournaments all but un-winnable for anyone else but you or jody ? Oh wait, try to talk everyone into using the perfect racks right ? (whatever its called)get the sardo's back.

I'll repeat, you are not a bad guy. In fact away from a pool table I enjoy hanging out with you more than anyone.

Around the game though, I just can't handle it. All I get to hear about is how great you guys play. It gets old. You guys ran Mark Smith off, why? I'll answer cuz he can't run every rack.

Let me help you out for being a good team mate. When a guy misses a key ball and loses, it bothers them. Don't need to hear about it from the champions. A good team mate would just go out and win the next rack 10-0 to pick their other team mate up. I've been on teams with worse players that have had much more success and I've been on teams my entire life so I might know a little about this.

As far as getting drunk and taking a big loss, it's not the first time and most likely won't be the last time. I have learned from that experience though and don't nearly drink or bet as recklessly as I did. Lesson learned on my part. I know you can't win them all and I'm okay with that.

Rules are meant to be broken I guess.

Seriously...

I actually had to get on here and read this for myself.

- REALLY!? (In the most sarcastic way possible)
