Update on the Des Moines pool scene

That is the number one reason I quit going to many tournaments.

It seems the starting time gets later and later. Usually because some player is late, has called and asked to be put in, and thus everyone has to wait for the tardy (usually good) player.

Think of the fun of showing up on time, paying, waiting for the best player to show. You gotta play him! wtf? He shouldn't even be in the tourney!

Then you play your match, lose...and wait.........

.......wait some more............

..........still waiting..............

.......thinking about work tomorrow..........

..............while you wait some more...........

..then youdon't care anymore............

............then your match comes up!!!!!!!!! Yippee getta play some pool...........it's "only" 11:00 !!!

...then you lose for lack of interest.............

What a great fun-filled night............NOT.

That's my take on these tournaments after all these years.

fwiw,

Jeff Livingston

Here's an idea. While waiting for the Tourney to start or for your next match, you could............. Play Pool! Take your cue to a 7 or 9'er and hit some balls. People will play before, during and after the tourney. And most for free! My God people, remember when there was no pool hall. I can have fun going to a grocery store. Life's short, enjoy it

I do that....or more accuately, I've done that. We're there to play a tourney, right?...that starts on time?

I show up early, buy beers, tip the help, practice on the tables, get in the tourney at the start time , and wait...for some guy who doesn't work for a living to show up late. Then I realize I'm an idiot for thinking pool players would actually start an event on time....It's like Lucy pulling the football out just as it is to be kicked by Charlie Brown. I finally learned.

Last time I did this at Dog's a few months ago, I arrived at early at 6:00 or 6:30 and didn't play my first match util 10:30. My second match was after midnight. Let's see, 6 hours of drinking and practicing for 10 minutes of actual competition. By that time, I, and anyone who came with me, am piss-ant drunk and don't really care about the tourney or pool. I'm thinking of crashin'.

That's not fun. It is not attractive to normal people. My wife wouldn't ever come with me for that. So, maybe we go to McCoy's instead, have dinner, sit and talk with old friends.

How about a 3-ball tourney where you get to play, say, every 15 minutes at least? Then you'd have some fun playing pool anyway, vs. waiting.

If I want to play pool while waiting for something, I'll simply use my home table....the table I bought after Encounters closed.

Thank you very much for the advice....I really appreciate it.

Hey Jeff, the time you didn't play your first match till 10:30 or so, was JJ the TD? God luv JJ

Ok, so we have established there needs to be something new and some changes in town for tourneys... what would everyone like to see? What kind of tourney? what day? what should the entry be? What game?

Stix is wanting to pick up tourneys again. They are willing to add money to the tourney - it would start on time, and we can do a side bet pool instead of an actual Calcutta. What else can you all think of that would be worth while for everyone?

I propose doing an 8ball APA tourney every Saturday at 2. You would need to be an current APA member and the race would be based off your skill level. Open $ to play, 100% payback with money added from the bar. Double elimination… What do you all think?!

That would get the league players aka the players with money to burn on alcohol out to the tourneys for sure. Saturday at 2 is a good time to start as well. Gives enough time that if you get eliminated you can just drive on over to the other Stix at 4 and play there.

Start it up and see how it goes, I'm down for that. Randy can put it in the packets also so a lot of people would know about it.

While I love Stix as it is my cheers sometimes, the tables have terrible rolls, and the pockets are GINORMOUS. You might have trouble getting much interest here. Money added to the bar always helps stir interest though. You never know.

I do agree, I feel like they have the most generous valleys on earth there. I do think the league crowd coming out would be much better business for Stix and they don't care about table rolls or big pockets. Most of the time they don't even care about winning. They just want to drink and have a good time. You didn't see a lot of bickering at the APA jack and jill people tried but were more out to have a good time and get lucky than play hard and win.

If it's about the money this is a good idea to generate business and be able to add money to a tourney.

As far as the players actually go...**cough** big table pool **cough**

Without offending too many people. Do Stix and Randy really wanna have 20+ people *****ing about handicaps all day ? Seems like it would just cause problems. I like the idea though, why not just assign APA type handicaps to people, and if they play they are their handicap. Or TAP or whatever, but if you call it a APA tournament, then Randy is gonna have to listen to *****ing.

No you don't... Really??

I never played APA and can't imagine the storm of circumstances that would get me TO play.

Nothing wrong with it, just not my cup of tea. Our league has too much drama at times...

Working? Time does not equal work.

Its fun in its own way, not to mention a free trip to Vegas is nice. The biggest thing I hate about the APA is all of the sandbagging!! ..... Jason, did that sound convincing?

Hot girls in swimsuits racking the balls?

I have heard some interest lately in a one pocket tournament. Ray suggested a graduated entry.

I don't know why there wouldn't be interest. Given the timing, I would like to play (if I can get there).

Graduated entry is probably okay. Handicapping would be fine also. Just something to help noobs be semi-competitive rather than getting run over.

Long term prosperity depends on short term concessions. (something pro-pool hasn't exactly embraced, but the Womens tour looks like its on the way out as well. Guess neither model worked.)
