Driving - things to see and do

I've always wanted to make the drive to Las Vegas, and this is the year. We are driving from north TX to Las Vegas, taking the northerly route out and the southerly route back. We are tentatively planning to stop in Amarillo, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff on the way out, and Tucson, El Paso and Big Spring on the way back.

What "must see" things are there between TX and Vegas that I'll want to see on the trip? Any ideas?
 
Well I am not sure how long of a drive you are planning on making it.
but route 66 in flagstaff to Kingman is a scenic drive. You may want to see Meteor Crater outside of Flagstaff and also The Big ditch we have here in AZ, Petrified forest.
Not anything billiard related in Northern AZ not even a good pool hall sorry. Crossing the hoover damn is quite an experience. You might take the Damn tour!

Thanks for Meteor Crater. That'd be fun to see. I had to google Big Ditch. Now I feel stupid. :o Looking forward to Hoover Dam. Thanks for the response. :)

About an hours drive northeast of Vegas lies Valley of Fire National Monument. Just west of Vegas at the end of W. Charleston Blvd is Red Rock Park. Both a definite trip worth making. I concur on the Dam. Take a few hours and do the entire trip. Its one thing to lean over the top and another to look up at the top.

Hopefully AZ will have a booth or something to gather around. Look forward to meeting you.

Stay away from the Dam, as you could get stuck in traffic like a freind coming home for Salt Lake for 3 HOURS.

A few years ago I had time to kill between singles and teams. Rented a HD and took off for the Valley Of Fire.

Here are my observations.

1. It is scenic
2. Drink lots of water, you don't know that you're getting dehydrated cuz your sweat evaporates
3. It is NOT a dry heat......110 is freakin HOT!!!!
 
Honestly if you want the strip, and go into some of the New Hotels, and Window Shop like in Balago, and Cesars Shops, and People Watch it will be fun.

Is the free pass freeway done yet....Last time I drove up..(two years ago) they were working on some super high over passes like they were building a freeway that bypasses the damn slow winding damn road..

Hi Ken,

Flew over the dam on the way into Vegas a couple of weeks ago. The high bridge under construction is still that. At least three years worth and still going. One section of bridge decking to go. The dam is still one of the great wonders of the world. Worth the trip! Just not Saturday or Sunday.

Do NOT miss the Dam...very worthwhile stop. Like cardiac says...try to avoid Sat-Sun. The tour is pretty amazing!! Do it now, because as soon as the overhead bridge (bypass) is through, there won't be any more tours.

Grand Canyon is another don't miss.....

Do yourself a favor and take 89A South out of Flagstaff. Go thru Sedona on the way back to Phx. It's not really out of the way, and just might be the most beautiful drive in all of Az. (if you decide to go, PM me for more detailed advice on what to see-where to go there.)

If you wanted to see the Canyon, on the way would be the ticket. Maybe get a room In Grand Canyon Village, instead of Flagstaff.
