tip glue question.

over the years ive had a few tips pop off on cues with soft ferrules.one i particular was an old helmsteader. the tip was a elkmaster. i fixed the problem by taking the shaft to my old willard and refacing the ferrule with the carbide disk on the willard.it leaves small groves in the ferrule and thus more glue surface. this has just happened again with a cheap import cue with a soft ferrule again. so i used the willard disc trick again. i was wondering if this is a common problem for all or just me. i have had this issue with loctite 454, cotrol gel, and a few others. i keep the glue fresh. i am trying the loctite ultra gel because it says impact resistant.i was wondering if anyone else is using ultra gel with success. thanks b

It has been working great for me. Even the phenolic tips are staying on with this glue. To avoid problems I throw the tube out after 3 weeks and open a fresh one if I have one that sits that long.

I even like the Loc-tite Gel better than the 454 and it costs much less.

I've been using Loc Tite Ultra Gel since my last bottle of Tiger ran out.
I'm not overly busy but have installed quite a few tips and none have come back. I used the Ultra on a Super Pro that the player was going to use as a break cue and it hasn't come back so it must be decent.

hey palmetto

Hope this helps. I recieved great help from the pros on AZ with a similiar problem.

thank you for the link. the one thing i didnt try was what ive been doing for years on layered tips, mooris in particular, is lick them .what i have done with the soft ferrules is cut the grooves and let the glue dry longer as i stated in the op and that has worked but... at a tournament no time to wait.

I started useing the loctite and have never had a problem with any tips I replaces. I used it on phenolic, leather, G-10, White Diamonds , others, The trick is roughing the tip and ferrule off before installing. I let them sit for about 24 hours ,,but I have installed some on peoples cues and they used them right after I told them to leave them sit for a little and they have not had any problems at all, even on the break tips ,,,

I have 2 bottles of Joes rubberized Cyano in the freezer for when the Loc Tite runs out. I imagine that Joes glue works pretty good and will find out shortly. His bottles are 2oz.

Preparation, preparation, preparation. Most gels work great if both surfaces are prepared properly. Right now I'm using Tiger but have used various others with great results. (Duro, Loctite, etc)

duro gel super glue

i use the duro brand , have good results . face off the ferrule & sand bottom of tip with 100 grit paper . use air hose blow dust off,
apply glue to ferrule & tip spread around to be even . works good

Glue

I changed over to the Loctite Ultra about 11/2 years ago and it works for me.
