Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Ken, we all know ISPA is better. But until you guys put in diamond tables, have a few 9ft's. Figure out how to get people's ranking right, with the new system(couple years,it will happen) ANNOUNCE finals matches and have seating for people to watch. ISPA will be just another state tournament we go to because thats whats here. MAKE it a tournament EVERYONE has to come to. BTW: The way you all run the brackets with times is perfect. Alternate break is great. Longer races are very nice.

PS: add an optional 10ball tournament for next year. Open field, play a race based on your rank (level1,open,master,elite....4/5/6/7 ? )

I am still baffled by the ranking system. Its the age of computers and almost everyones stats from several years is online somewhere. I am sure you could take player AVERAGE and have a multiplier of strength of leage to figure out how well players can play. Also having masters from every possible place counted as masters along with all the level 1 players that should be in the masters should make playing masters much more equal for them. Everyone seems to compare themselves to Bowman, Barraks, Kuchero or any of the other top players to think they should or shoud not play masters. All the money is in masters so why is the player field so light?

Level 1 is flooded with "should be" masters.

Teams IMO you should have a 5,6,7,8,9,10 ranking for each person and playing open team, level1 team, and master team should have a total value of something like 30-34 for the open, 35-38 for level1 and 39+ for masters. I am not talking about the sandbaggers open but the real place people should be playing!

Our team and my Gf's team is sitting out this year for ISPA. Its the first time in 10 years for me. It was the BCA before the ISPA split when I first started playing. Many factors but its the most expensive tourney to attend. Payouts are not as good. Its the state of Iowa tourney!. Why is it played on the edge of the state? Last year is the worst tables I have seen at any state tourney, The racks were POS and couldnt get a tight rack for the life of me. MAKE IT RACK YOUR OWN! I could really care less if i give you a perfect rack and I expect the same in return from most.

Our team has played open/level1 5-6 times and have exactly 1 cash 13-16th. We played masters 1 time and got a 1st round bye and a win and cashed much higher than the long fight through level1. Last year we played FROs team and got the worst arse whoopin I have ever seen or been apart of. I think we missed a total of 4 shots in 9 games. IMO this team was a masters calliber team. I would have expected this if we were playing them in masters. Masters should be run or get run but if all the teams that should be there were there it would be some great competition.

just some thought or rants take it how you want,

GL to all players and teams going to ISPA

Here is a good way to figure out where people should be playing. This could be used in tournaments or league systems. Watch the whole thing, and you will see that this is a great system. This rating system eliminates sandbagging also!!!!

Yes JB I agree that system sounds like it would work really well. Only problem is how do you keep up with it? You need either a score sheet or computers to throw scores in. Otherwise after about a year that would work pretty good.

Only at poker stars do they give you the hands where you flop a full house and the other guy has quads...$380 hit and I was already stuck!!! Oh well off to reload.

Lol

the other guy is saying; only on poker stars will they deal someone a full house so they ship it to my quads. :poke:

A-9-9 flop, i'm thinking I'm lucky to have my raise called then I bet, get raised, i raise him, he shoves and Im so happy cause the trap worked...or so I thought. Rockets cracked by some lousy 9's...a whole bunch of 9's

The guys that won the intermediate teams this year are all state level master players, at least they will be next year. They play well and are tough to beat in our classic league here.

This is the problem with handicapping and divisions. There is always a best team/player left. They are a solid intermediate team but they will have a pretty tough time in the masters.

Congrats to them for their win though. It isn't easy to come through the larger fields with a short race like that.

They whipped us pretty handily. Not that we played well, but that's the way it went. I don't think they had much trouble winning out in that bracket, despite short races.

BUMP - i'm too lazy to look on page 4.

So I hope everyone looked at the Fargo Billiards rating system...it really is perfect! If we started it in Des Moines, it would take off and people would love it.

Is everyone looking forward to ISPA? Can't wait to play in a well run state tourney:) Now all I need to do is get the rest of my team to practice before we go.

.......I'll need it.

Let me know when you fellas hit the Valleys for some practice, I can never bring myself to play on them alone.

Well, considering ISPA starts a week from tomorrow, I'll be practicing from now till then.

Jason, you ready to hit some?

For the record, the team from Ft. Dodge that won the intermediate division only has one Master player, on any list in the state. I checked the lists for the teams that entered the Ames team tournament a few weeks ago.

They also all play in the singles events, so it's not like they are sneaking into the intermediate team division. BUT, Valley is different anyway because they don't move players up based on known ability.

There were many new players at Valley, from the Davenport and Dubuque areas, that easily play Master level that were playing in the Open and Level 1.

And what are your thoughts on this? I think this is acceptable. There is very little money in the pool world and those who play well have put in a lot of effort. I think they should be allowed to play in these until they reach the criteria to move up. Just moving people up on known ability, I think, is unfair. If Efren moved here, he should be allowed to play in the open although, I am going to give him a lot of crap for it. Have a criteria and stick to it. No need to change the rules every year to account for an individual scenario.
