Update on the Des Moines pool scene

One of my favorite weddings ever to attend. 7 minutes 28 seconds and one phone call came in as well as one beer bottle dropped....will not forget it!

Nor will I! I was best drunken buddies with my "ex" Geena's husband that hates me. Very weird. It's a good thing I was drunk!! lol....Good times....

A good example is I was clearly cheering for Athens team at State and wanted them to win and was even going to bet they didn't get double dipped. For some odd reason Richardson, Chance, Jamie, JB, and Justin did not hold that against me.

WHILE SITTING WITH OUR TEAM btw, lol :) :D

LOL true, that kind of makes it even more funny.

Stix in Windsor Heights would like to host a new weekly tourney. I have done a poll before in a previous thread and the consensus with DSM pool players was they would like to see a race to 5 mixed format(3 games of 8-Ball/6 games of 9-Ball). Winner of the flip chooses which game to play first or first break.

How could this be handicapped? Would it even be worth handicapping since it's kind of a best of both worlds type of deal. Format could also be (4 games of 8-Ball/5 games of 9-Ball) although that may take a hair longer. Soliciting for comments. I also would like to get a break and run pot going that pays per ball at this tourney.

Any ideas, Worm is working with me on this one and we are thinking Saturday around 1 or 2PM start time is right so that if people go 2 and out they can still play in Ankeny and have time to play at Gerri's. Not trying to kill the other Saturday tournaments but just trying to give another option.

It sounds like a great format. I would like to see something like that come off. Is it WDM or Ankeny Styx?

Why not have something at Smokies?

Sounds like a cool tournament.

What if the lower handicap chose which set he wanted the spot in, or do you even think it would make a difference?

Don Hood told me Sunday night that he wants to start a Friday scotch doubles with partners determined by a draw.

This one would be in Windsor Heights. I like the format and I also like having it handicapped fairly. A lot of times a good fair handicapped tourney will make everyone feel like they have a chance to win. Maybe make handicaps consistant with a 5-5, 5-4, 5-3, and 5-3/breaks races. If you have two AA players they can race to 6 to settle it. The short races in of themselves provide a handicap of sorts. I have a better chance of beating someone better going to 5 than I do going to 9 is my point.

Sounds like a cool tournament.

I definitely think lower handicaps are important for a sustainable tourney. I don't want "filler" though, I want these guys to be able to win.

I think there is potential here. With new businesses opening it would be very wise for Stix WH to establish a tourney on Saturdays to get people there before a competitor beats them to the punch.

I agree, but having a tournament at Smokies with more than say 30 poeple, and six tables makes for a long weekend.

Dang DROID. Hit send twice.

Whatever gets put together, I need some lead time to work it into the 'plans'. Or Bruce has to come knock on the door to see if I can come out and play. ROTFLMAO.

I talked with some people about this idea over the weekend, guess ill share it here.

Single elimination tournament. Would work perfect with the APA style Worm wanted to do anyhow.

Lets talk about good and bad things about SINGLE elim:

1. If you play a great match and beat a strong player, they're out and you dont have to mess with them anymore.
2. Shorter nights, not waiting for a slow losers side. Or if you lose first round:)
3. Makes it so more people have a chance to win, instead of having 3 great players get put into the losers then still beat everyone out and take the top spots.
4. More pressure to play a good match. Lots of times i play dumb in my first couple matches because i know if i lose i can play the losers side still.

Please feel free to give you opinion, good or bad. That's what we're doing here.

Why don't everyone just go play at Gerri's then... Oh wait, it's double elim now too I think.

that was a single elim race to 1.....lol

I just think that if it's not double elim, people wont think they are getting their moneys worth. Who wants to wait say an hour or so to start their match, loose because of a couple of bad rolls or whatever, and then might as well go home. Some poeple look at a double elim as getting a second chance or a way to work some bugs out.

What about a single elim with a rebuy?
