First 147 on television

Well nobody seems to be contesting the fact that Steve Davis made the 1st televised 147 so it must be true However I really thisnk that Cliff Thorburn was the first to do it on tv. Everyone in England stopped what they were doing to watch it and thats why I think he was the first. Are we positive the Davis was the first?

Davis was first, no question. Steve made his in 1982, Thorburn's came in the World Championships the following year. Thorburn's was the first at The Crucible, so that may be what you're thinking of.

I love watching Ronnie O'Sullivan get a max break in something like 7 minutes. THAT is impressive.

Super, thanks for the link. I tried to send you a pm John and it says you need to empty some pm's. Send me a pm as I have question for you.

My favorite 147 is the one where a black rattles and flukes across the table and banks back into the original pocket. I'm pretty sure is was Higgins, but I'm not sure. It's on You Tube.

Cliff Thorburn was not the only Canadian to have a televised 147.Kirk Stevens had a 147 in 1984, that's worth seeing. It was against Jimmy White.

You can find it on You-tube, I just don't know how to post the link.

TX Poolnut meant John, and not Alex:

You're right that Alex never had a 147 in competition. He got close a couple of times, though:

I have a DVD with the second attempt on it, I'll try uploading it at some point so there's a better quality version on there. Higgins' high tournament break was 142, and that is also on YouTube for anyone who's interested...

It's tough to compare a 147 in snooker to anything in pool. Considering the size of the table and the accuracy required as well as the finesse I think a 147 clearance trumps making huge runs in straight pool - I take that back - it doesn't trump the big straight pool runs but it's different in a way that's hard to really explain. I do however agree with the poster who said that in 14.1 you are not safe when you run 149 balls in a 150 point match wheras in snooker you are safe in the frame after a certain point.

Still, watching these clearances is just mind blowing for me. You see every type of shot that pool players are faced with and the snooker players really bring it on some truly tough shots. Steve Davis banking a ball to continue the run? Then later he shoots an 8 foot straight in shot. Steven Hendry's last backwards cut on the final black? As Joe Rogan is fond of saying the skill level shown is just bananas.

THANK GOD for YouTube so that we have these runs preserved for the world to enjoy.

Anyone notice that some of these videos have nearly 500,000 views?

(I am assuming this is the video) : One great thing about this is Bill Werbeniuk, may he RIP, stopping his match to watch Cliff finish off his perfect game.

Dave

Yep, that's the one, Bill stops his match on the next table and joins Cliff and Terry in a small group hug after Cliff finishes the 147 break. Great stuff ! Thanks for this thread and the great links, they never get old.
