Mosconi give away?

A friend of mind tonite told me his father played Willie back in the late 50's in a challange match that his father won in Sams billiards,Derby, Ct. then Willie gave him the cue that he lost with as a trophy...what kind of cue was he playing with then, Rambo,Zam,Bushka,or simply a Brunswick...I wil send picks when he brings the cue, for me to take the pics. of..thanks ahead of time

I had a guy tell me that he played Fat's in Phillie as a child and "Fats was so impressed with his play, he gave the kid his cue"

The cue he showed me was a bottom of the line McDermott that was manufactured after Fats was long dead....

I would suspect this story is BS.

Well, actually, I do too. Not that Mosconi never lost an exhibition game, though it was very very seldom. I just don't see him giving away the cue he was playing with. If some cuemaker had given him a cue at an earlier exhibition that he had no use for, maybe he'd give that one away. But I still don't see Mosconi being in a generous frame of mind after losing. He hated to lose.

Mike Shamos did an article a few years ago about his visit to the Mosconi home before Willie died. He had a closet full of cues - many unopened - that cuemakers had given him over the years in the hope that he might start playing with it.

Brunswick was already making 2 piece Willie Hoppe in the 50's right? So, Mosconi working for Brunswick would likely be giving away Brunswick products as gifts.
