I was cleaning out one of my old cases and found a set of notes I took while playing in the annual 14.1 tourney where I used to work.....maybe 15 years ago. I took these notes over 2 days while talking with some of the guys playing.....Allen Hopkins, Jack Calovito, Bob Maidhoff, Don Polo, Jim Rempe.....among others. Here is a short list of what I took note of. My main question was what is the biggest difference between me
an ok 50 ball runner, and them!
These guys knew me and were real nice about it....they had a feeling I loved the game.
Rempe.....Every ball has a job to do! NEVER just shoot em off....make a plan for each shot, and don't be affraid to change the plan when needed.
Jack.....He always told me to watch and learn from Allen Hopkins....he felt there was no finer player around the stack then Allen, especially shooting tight position. He would say..."look at Allens cue ball! it's on a string....no wonder he never misses!"
Allen Hopkins.....when he wasn't asking me to bet on something
, he was full of great ideas for me. Mainly pay attention to the cue ball!!!! don't get lazy and let it sit on the rail when you can avoid it....also, ALWAYS check the stack for dead ones, don't work harder then you need to.
Don Polo...liked to smash em open and run em off style of playing. When I am trying to play the old school nudge em out style, and it isn't working.....I like his style!
...kinda like the German players.
Sigel.....CONFIDENCE....so what I'm not the best player there, NOBODY in the room started off running 100's. Play like you are the BEST! anyway.
This was the first time I made it to the 2nd day of the event. I never ran big #'s mostly a bunch of 30's and 40's....which I found out will win you a lot of games.
