Do tips go bad?

What is the shelf life of a tip and how to tell when it is no longer useable?
I came across boxes of the old champion tips with the red fibre base but they
heve to be at least 15 yrs old. Try or trash em?? Must have 500 tips!

Try them for sure and if they hit a little weary use them on housecues, no use wasting them. It might be a great replacement tip for 500 or so house sticks or they could be the magic tip you are looking for. I have a few dozen but I don't know how old they are and I have stuck some of them on cues from my homeroom.--Leonard

If they are the old Champion tips they are older than 15 yrs. I believe. Chandivert started making copies of the old Champions 20 or so years ago but they never played the same. Do tips go bad? Probably, but leather is pretty tough.

Don't trash them. There's always Ebay!

On a serious note. If you want to sell some of them I'd take 10 of them just to have them on hand in case any of the old timers want one replaced. I'll pay you $20.00 to ship 10 of them to me. PM me if you're interested. Thanks.
 
One issue with the old champions is the glue between the red backing and leather may be brittle and allow the tip to pop off. I don't know of a good fix for this.

chuck up to the tip and cut the pad off and install a new one when you put the tip on
 
This thread is a little old, but, to answer the question. The pads on the Champions were installed using contact cement. When the tip is trimmed and burnished the heat often makes this cement soft and squishy. I always put them on a little over size and before trimming I would burnish the sides of the tip a little with a piece of leather or paper towel so as to get the glue soft and then I would just work the tip off of the pad. I then rubbed off the contact cement, sanded the pad which is still glued to the ferrule, then re-glued the tip using my normal glue and then trimmed and continued with my normal installation. In the 60's, 70's and eighties these were the tip that most favored.

The thread is a little old! So are the tips which i still have!! Thank you for all the info on the tips. I have had quite a few people pm me for some. I will respond to everyone within the next week. Thank you!
