poolrooms the only winner

i don't hardly ever start threads, but i have had this thought for a while and wondered what people think.

how many times has the poolroom been the only "winner" in your experience? say 100 dollars sets, somebody ends up one set, ands pool time is 80. the examples could continue forever. i dont think id be venturing too much to say this happens a LOT, WAY WAY TOO MUCH.

so what to do? we all practice so hard, we want the results to be less luck, and more about skill...... but i think settling for shorter races would do the trick in many instances (not all). i think the main objective should be to keep money in our (players) pockets (hence more action, more people coming in etc).... i really think this is a bigger issue than you may think at first. another one may be to bet more... easier said than done, but maybe us getting out of where we are comfortable may be a smart idea. starting over and doubling another one, gotta love it. playing the "last" set for X amount more. these are kinda standard though. any more thoughts? id love to hear good ideas.

ps, no offense to room owners :) we all wish you the best no matter what is said here, where else will we play?

I usually try to set the terms such that someone will be winner. Often I will say something like one more set plus time if I battled all night and we are even.

If nothing else I try to at least flip for the time. I hate losing but I also hate just breaking even and paying time.

As for short sets vs. long sets that really doesn't matter. I have played races to three for $100 all night and broke even and races to 15 for a $1000 and broke even.

The only way to guarantee you won't break even is to set it up in advance that you will play an odd number of sets or and ahead set with the cash frozen.

I have often also negotiated a set number of games. I might tell someone I will play 11 games or 21 games and then we can adjust after that. That way no matter what I will get x-number of games in and one of us will come out ahead even if it's only be one game.

Before starting, tell your opponent that instead of playing many 50$ sets race to 7, you'll do 1 race to 21 for $250 + tabletime.

That way you won't end up even after countless hours, and the best part, you can quit winner and no one can complain :-)

The house always wins!!!

When you take into account the overhead involved, that is not always the case.

Rent on a building
Payroll for the staff
Utilities
Maintaining the equipment
Insurance
Etc, etc.

That 6 or 8 dollars per hour table time doesn't go all that far.

Jeez, it's just a saying...I didn't ask for you to write me a business plan. Trust me, I know about all the expenses involved in running a pool hall because I manage one.
