being politically correct and biting my tongue has gotten me nowhere. Shame on all the BCAPL league operators that refused to let their players know about a pool tournament in Oklahoma City! You know who you are.

You may not agree or like what I am doing but we bring the best tables and always pay our players. I say: LET THE PLAYERS DECIDE. How dare any of you keep a tournament from your players. If the players know and then don't come that's one thing, but if they don't even get the chance to decide if they can go or afford to then that's just wrong. I thing some of you have lost your minds. Get off your power trip!!!

If some of you are offended, then tough. I will not bite my tongue anymore and politically correctness is out the window. Yes I do this for a living and I expect to make a living at this. But if you ask anyone that knows me they will tell you that I love pool, I am fair, and I am one of the guys out here that knows the little guys are the driving force in pool.

This will not be my last rant, I have many of them in my head just begging to bust out. If we don't all start working together pool will stay right where it is and that is just sad.

Just curious, Why is it up to the BCAPL operators to inform the players about a tournament? is this a BCAPL event ?? if it is not then the operators have no duty to inform anyone. If it is a BCAPL event it should be listed on the website. Also some posters around the area would help, particularly in the place the tournament is being played. Word will get around if done correctly.

Tournaments get mentioned when they send out flyers and pay for ads. That how I hear about the ones I visit.

I rely on my operator for a precise understanding of the rules and record keeping of matches and to match me up with an opponent that doesn't cream me.

Rick,

Many years ago, I stopped by one of the rooms in Vegas. Wanted to know what events there were around town. Nothing on the bulletin board. Asked the manager why. He told me he was not going to let the players in his room know about events at other rooms / bars because he didn't want to lose potential business on the video poker machines at his bar. The machines are his #1 profit center. Now Vegas has a magazine / website to do the job.

At first sight, I figured the same thought process was in action. The operator being overly protective of "their" players. I've tried to think of reasons why anyone would want to hide an event other than the one above. I'm with you! This is stupid. Tournaments are there for players to "show" off their skills. Their skills are honed at their weekly BCAPL league nights or practice nights. The LO might find there are more players in their area than they knew about because of your effort. More players for their league. I see it as a win / win for the players and promoters. JMHO.

My guess is the operator thought you (Bad Boys) were invading their territory. Not going to help THEM be successful. MY players will do what I tell them (or don't tell them). This kind of shortsightedness is really bad for the game. Wish you were here in the Northeast promoting pool. Only major event like the ones you do is Super Billiards Expo. To the best of my knowledge, Ed Hagan has no part in the promotion of that event. Just table delivery and setup.

Hope to see you at Reno.

Lyn

I had a friend in Oklahoma City go to all the local bars and pool halls, he put up more than 300 flyers. When he went back he found that they had all been thrown away. Yes that's a bad move by the locations because it is a win win for everyone if there is a big event in the area. Apparently they don't see it that way. We don't have everyones e-mails so we send the info to the league operators asking them to help get the word out. We also let the association know if they got us their flyer for their event we would promote it for them. We were told they weren't going to pass it on because they didn't want us there.
It's a long a complicated but stupid story. My point is they should let the players decide, not keep the info from them. It is simply the sport that eats it's self.

Rick, I know where you are coming from. If I were a league player and my LO took it upon themselves to decide if I needed to know about any event I would be pissed. If they know about something and have the info they should pass it on. I know it is not their responsibility and they really don't have to do it but again if I found out they knew about it and decided not to let anyone know, I wouldn't be happy. I think it happens all the time Rick will alot of the leagues, bars and pool rooms.

I'm not surprised. I'm quite saddened, but not surprised.

Growing pool in general should help grow business in every room. Sadly, the room owners don't see it that way.

It's been a while since I played golf with any regularity, but I clearly recall seeing posters for tournaments at other courses posted, in several different area course clubhouses. Seems they "get it" that if you get a bigger turnout in one tournament, you're likely to get bigger turnouts at the ones you host, too.

I remember when we had Mike Massey come and do a show here, a year and a half ago. The only reason I found out about it was a buddy who got the APA newsletter, and saw it there. (The local APA LO was bringing Mr.Massey to three rooms in the state, thus explaining why it was in his newsletter.) I never saw any flyer or poster in any of the three different places I play about him coming. I was a little disappointed by what I felt was a small turnout. The show was awesome! Talking to other folks after the fact, they hadn't heard about it, either.

Probably the best answer to all this will be localized websites, ones that cover all the events in a particular state or region. (I've been tempted to try and put one together for our area, but I fear not being able to keep it going properly.) Still, I expect many potential players won't ever look for info in this manner. Word of mouth, between players, is best. Getting those players to know about tournaments is the real trick, especially if the local rooms won't cooperate. I'll certainly run my yap if I hear about anyone coming here, and about any of the local tourneys that are run in my neighborhood.

I am really happy with my LO. She/he are fantastic and cooperate with local halls with regard to tourneys. The don't hold anything back. As a matter of fact, we don't pay any green fee, and all of the cash collected all goes back to the players. The LO takes absolutely nothing from us except what we drink and eat. They are great.
I do see your point though, some are too self absorbed and greedy.

I will be in town until next Sunday. I would love to get together. There are things we can do together to benefit everyone. We have no intention of going away, there is no need to not work together all that does is hurt the players
