9ball question from last night

Heh, heh, heh. So, you've never had the pleasure of being introduced to bar rules during say a local 8-ball tournament you happened upon, eh? :grin:

The first thing I ask when I play in a bar for the first time: Are we playing call pocket (i.e., BIH) or call shot (i.e, regular bar rules where you have to call all kisses/caroms/rails/etc., no BIH, all fouls are shot from the kitchen, etc. -- and, if so, do you play [by the chicken$hit rule] that you have to call all incidental rails touched)?

Me too. And, I have used this shot myself and also instructed some of my league players to do this once or twice. Intentional fouls have been a part of the game for some time now. What better time than that scenario to use one.

I do not see how anyone could find it unsportsmanlike to shoot this shot, which is well within the rules (well, in MOST leagues/tournaments it is).

People just don't like to lose. If you do something they can complain about, they will complain about it, even there was nothing wrong with what you did. Some people think it is unsportsman-like to play safeties. That doesn't make them right. Uninformed people like that tend to be weaker players anyways, so you are probably better off just agreeing with them, playing by their rules, and taking their money.

Call pocket dosen't matter how it gets there as long as it goes....

Call shot you have to call how the ball gets to the pocket.

many a fight started over these rules I prefer the set that is written down!!!

And how do you respond when the locals then say, "what the hell are you playing pool for if you don't even know the damn rules?!!"
 
The guy was totally wrong. This is never loss of game at any pro tourney. It's a common shot.
 
What a joke ! The guy actually thought it was a loss of game if you pocket the 9 in without hitting a object ball ,,,,huh,,:eek: I had a similar situation once. A guy I was playing against in 9 ball couldnt get out to run the table as he had a bad break so he had a strait it 4 ball but the 5 ball was all boxed in at the other end of the table and no way to hit it so this guy calls a safe and shoots the 4 ball in. And says it's your shot now I played safe ..:rolleyes: WTF !! I have never heard that but after argueing for 10 minutes and laughing in this guys face along with everybody else he wasnt to happy with the position he had left himself...lol. I told him Ok I will play this out and was gonna shoot the cue ball into the pocket and give him ball in hand ,,but he still could not hit it so he was screwed pretty much anyways...Some people just should not argue about a game they know nothing about clearly...It was a fun night though,,we laughed for weeks about this ,,,,ED :wink:

If playing bar rules 8-ball for fun, "I'm just glad you guys play real pool and not that sissy ball-in-hand stuff. Ball-in-hand, doesn't that sound like something they would be playing in a gay bar in San Francisco?":rolleyes:

If playing in a local tournament, I just ask the tournament director beforehand what his rules are. Doesn't matter what anyone else says and what the regular bar rules are. He's God, his interpretation of the rules is law and whatever ruling the TD makes is appreciated.

Oh, yeah, I've had that pleasure:rolleyes: I don't play 8 ball anymore than I have to {read care to} and have always played by the rules as in the BCA Rule Book. I don't play any other way, never have, never will. The rules have been that way for as long as I've been playing and are only changed by people who don't know the difference and I don't have to play with them. And won't. I'm too old and been around the game too long to put up with that crap.
