Most stains will do this but a wiping stain will do it best. Apply stain for a minute then wipe it off. The majority of the colour will be left in the grain. Most of them use very dark brown or black stains.

If this is a new shaft and the intention is to colour the grain the most, you should sand it down with progressively finer grits. I would finish with 800 or 1000 grit and it will partially burnish the shaft and reduce the amount of stain that sticks to the smooth parts.

Ignorant question here...... Why would you want to do this?

Thanks.

Hi Scott,

Its just the style that most people accept over here. Look at most ash snooker or English pool cues and they all have very dark if not black grain.

Cheers

Thanks for the tip, i'll look into it.

I have not looked at any Ash cues from Europe lately. One question I am curious about is how smooth is the grain on the cues you are seeing with the dark streaked grain? If it is really smooth and not rough textured like most Ash is, then it might not be a stain, but rather a darker filler you are seeing that is used to fill the grain/pores. Again I am just making a guess here.

Thanks for explaining. I did not know that.
