Shot Question: Cue on rail,,, OB downtable.

Line up, look at the back of the pocket, and make the ball
The shot is essentially no different than if the CB was away from the rail and you wanted to hit it significantly above the equator (for some reason). Slow roll the CB so it does not follow he OB into the pocket.
Don't know why, and I'm pretty sure it may be just something that works for me, but when I'm on the short rail like that with a pretty long nearly straight in shot, what little I learned playing snooker helps for me. This is the only time I ever use a pause in my backstroke, and in this case, has been helpfull for me.

I have always shot this shot very well. And as the above quote states this is what I do. I tune everything out and concentrate on the back of the pocket and of course most importantly a controlled smooth(stay down and do not hop up) short stroke.
Yes. Weak players are afraid of miscuing over the top of the cue ball so they jack up too much which makes the cue ball curve left or right since we rarely hit perfectly center cue ball. Level cue is huge but confidence is bigger. So practicing this shot is a must til you feel confident. Short strokes with an open bridge are worth trying imo.
all about alignment
with the CB on the rail making for a very short bridge, you'll have to pay strong attention to alignment when setting up for your shot. some tips:
- make sure you set yourself behind the ball for the shot before you get down
- take care in lining up the whole cue with the shot, a short bridge makes it very difficult in lining up shots. the tendency for your cue to be off line and you not being able to notice it are a lot higher
- restrict yourself to center ball
- try different methods of focusing on the shot, OB or CB. personally, once i set up, i just look at the CB and concentrate on stroking through it straight and hitting center ball. as far as i'm concerned, once you're set in your stance and alignment, focusing at the OB isn't going to change much.
- lots of practice

One last thing. Because you have to hit the cue ball pretty close to the top with a level cue always chalk well before shooting. and as many have said use a short stroke to cut down on mis cues.

I figured out how to use the cue table editor,, I think. So above should be a table.lol
Although, My original post was talking about a straight in shot with cue on rail. This is the actual shot I missed in a tournament and it cost me. Above is exactly what I did.
Its really not too hard but I came home and shot it several times. And I found out ,,for me,, I consistently did the same thing as above. A small adjustment and started making it every time. I wont mis this shot again anytime soon.lol
I also had some other players shoot this,,without saying much to them. And they missed it in the same manner. So maybe it is not just me that it throws the eye off. Try it,,, if you have a table ,,and let me know the results.(Now I have brought it up ,might not be the same ) But that is OK.
I found the slight pause(someone suggested) in the stroke,, with cue on rail does seem to help ,,,not sure why though.

Not an easy shot, at least for me. But when I am on the rail, smooth fluid stroke is what I focus on. Almost sacrificing power even if I need it for position, as much as I could, as I am more accurate that way...
