Should I practice on fast or slow cloth?

Reposting from the main forum, as I'm interested in the instructors' opinions on drilling on a fast or slow cloth.

I have a table at home that I use mostly for drills and practice. I need to re-cover it soon, so I'm trying to decide what type of cloth I want. I typically play on 8 footers that have napped woolen cloths. However, I've been considering worsted cloth to improve my speed control.

Is it likely to be helpful or harmful to drill and practice on a fast cloth when I typically play on slower ones? It seems like the fast cloth would help my speed control, but at the same time it seems like it would make it easier to get the cue ball to move around at slower speeds, which is not reflective of what I normally play on. Thanks in advance for your responses.

If you have a good feel for the speed of the shot, it doesn't matter what kind of cloth you are shooting on. You set your centergistics on your main table, and then you can easily make adjustments any time you are on a different table.

IOW, if you establish your personal speeds on fast cloth, and you end up playing on a slower table, you just adjust your shot speeds to compensate for the slower cloth.

We always need to adjust to the conditions. The one who does it quickest has a big advantage.

That being said, if you know you usually play on one kind of cloth, I would think you would want to practice with similar conditions.

rons819...One of the main objectives of MD 5 is to develop a "feel" for how the cloth plays on your table. As you know, this is based on having the same stroke for all SOP shot speeds. The only thing that changes is the rate of acceleration through the CB, to your finish position. The idea is to be able to adjust to another table's playing conditions very quickly, based on what you have developed (as muscle memory) for the playing condtions of your home table (or the table you play on the most). If you're still struggling with this, please call me, and I can help you over the phone. Have you watched your dvds?

I've been doing my drills...

...but I haven't watched my DVDs in quite awhile :sorry:

Actually, I was thinking the other day of getting them out to watch, as I want to evaluate how my current process compares to what we developed during training. I'll do that this week.

I do agree with you and Steve about setting my centergistics on my home table and then adjusting. I was more viewing it from the perspective that on a fast cloth I can hit a lot softer and still get the cue ball to move appropriately. I tend to hit more accurately and stay within my process when hitting softer. I was concerned that practicing shape drills on a fast cloth may not be a good idea given that I usually compete on slower cloth. So, I agree with Steve that I should practice on similar conditions to which I play on.

Thanks for your responses!
