sneaky pete advice on tapers and makers

Hey all,

New around here, nice forum fellas (and ladies I'm sure). I'm gonna try to get back into pool after 7+ year laps on regular play. I have my 1st little one on the way, and I'm gonna need some close by relaxation to clear my head; what better that playing a game of straight?

I'm looking for a SP, not to be so sneaky but like lots of us, I just grew up using a house cue and the linen wraps were never my thing. I used to play w/a Ray Schuler back in '00 but that cue is long gone now.

For the life of me, all these different tapers, joints, tips, I got no clue.

Here's what I know, I used to like the taper on a duffrin canadian house cue, any one know what taper that is?
I always used my Schuler cue to break with too w/o issues, probably not the best idea though...

I have my eye on a few cue makers right now, hell they all look great! The work of Sly, Cole, Frey and Diveney have caught my eye and I think they are in my budget wheel house. Anyone else I should consider; my budget is $400 max?

Anyways, I have done a forum search but all the taper talk has me baffled. I'm just looking for a nice classy player.

Best to all,

Danny

Have a look at the jump/break cues made by Andy Gilbert. They make good playing cues too.

There may be a few in the Wanted/For Sale forum.

You might consider a plain jane wrapless cue in the wanted/for-sale section. These have the added advantage that no one else will mistake your cue for a house cue and try to use it.

Any of the guys you're looking at should be able to arrive at workable specs based on concrete examples, but you need to provide some fairly concrete info if you want to ensure the results.
Best of luck to you!
