Hi,

I wanted to update the forum on Kevin. He was in the hospital for about 2 weeks. He has a respiratory problem and is now attached to oxygen tanks for the next several weeks trying to get his lungs in order. Right now he is home. The doctors think something in the shop attributed to this. He'll be getting online soon enough.

wow!

guy's been in hospital and on supplemental oxygen and the only thing you can think about is him giving you a call to discuss a few bucks?

i'm sure that's the first thing on his mind.

*inhale* must call *inhale* need to *inhale* find phone. *inhale* where's my charger

have a little heart

I hope Kevin gets up on his feet soon. That scares me. I've definitely been breathing in some CA and Cocodust when I should not have.

Hang in there Kevin!

Hope Kevin gets better soon
I've known cue builders who had to quit building because of respiratory
problems from the exotic wood dust.

I'm sure iif he had all of his notes and phone numbers he could call everybody he owes a cue to directly, inbetween puffs from his oxygen tank.

Although he died of a heart attack his wife commented later the cue work may have been what actually killed him. This is not second hand, this from a conversation in Vegas during a BCA show.
I have known a few old auto finishing guys . They shook like crazy and could not keep a thought straight in their heads. With so many cue makers and cue hobbyists working in very close confines such as garages, basements and spare bedrooms the health hazards can't be ignored for themselves and their families who also live there. The dust you can deal with but some of the finished can be very dangerous even under ideal conditions much less spraying with a window open and a fan. It is just a cue, not worth your life or maybe having a child born with a birth defect because you are exposing your family to this stuff.

Craig: I would like to thank you for keeping everyone up to date.

Few people appreciate the health problems (yes I said problems; not issues) associated with cuemaking. About 7 years ago I found myself in ICU for 4 days and in the hospital for another 4 days trying to recover from respiratory problems. I will never completely recover. Once your lungs are damaged they never completely heal (or at least mine have not). After the $44000.00 hospital bill I needed cardiac surgery (kidding). I wonder how many cues I will have to build to pay for that? (not kidding).

There are a number of us older cuemakers in this forum with our own individual health problems. And there are many who are no longer with us.

I personally wish Kevin the best and a speedy recovery.

Good Cuemaking,

I have couple of cues that Kevin was suppose to finish for me in January. As far as I know he is too sick to get them done so I requested my 4 predator shafts and ebony dufferin back for now. He told me after 3 weeks when he goes to see the dr. I will be gone to Korea for 3 months in 3 weeks. Its unfortunate that he is having this health problem but I am sure he can find someone to get my things and at least send them back. I paid in full but for now I would like my items before I leave and hope he can find someone to send them back to me. Email me Kevin and let me know.

I hope Kevin recovers fully.
I'd like to know what got him sick but am guessing it was from spraying .

I'm quitting spraying and will get rid of more chemicals in my shop.

Hope Kevin recovers quickly and no lasting effects.
I use waterbased finish right now, dipping it and I use a dust collection at all machines in my shop, not a shopvac but a real DC plus an overhead hanging air cleaner. It scares me to think of the damage this stuff can do to you over time if you do breathe it in.
Even when you do everything right, something can go wrong. This morning, at a brandnew building at a large dealership one town over from me, they had an explosion in the new car detailing dept. and one person was killed. My step daughter, up until a week ago, worked next to that dept. and knows most of the guys that worked in it. Sometimes we don't fully realize the dangers that exsist from all the items we work with in our trades until something bad happens.

I hope Kevin recovers fully and quickly. I have to go back to turning wood now, where did I put that respirator? :(

I wish Kevin a recovery of some degree.
I say some degree , as I realise that a full recovery is not realistic.
I am having liver problems at the moment myself. The hard part is tring identify the trigger.
There are so many things things that can effect the liver and other organs, apart from the obvious alcohol, like water soluble cutting fluid, cleaners, solvents, then there are chemicals that cuemakers are exposed to.The obvious is from spray coatings, but the more subtle is things like, epoxy resins and other low odour products that are used in cuemaking.

I wish Kevin gets healthy and is back here to AZ and his workshop too. Also he could share his thoughts on the reason of his disease and warn others from repeating that.

Sounds like it is time for you to post a "shop tour!"

I've thought about that before, but it will take a few weeks to clean and organize it:D I spend 10 minutes trying to find something I just set down 2 minutes before. If I get the chance this weekend, I'll try to take some pics and start a new thread.

whats the word on Kevin? I don't know if it is just allergies, but I ain't breathing too well in the last couple days......

I Hope Kevin gets well soon, It's not just hard on the person, but family as well, And on so many different levels. I know exactly what They are probably going through, and same as with anyone going through such things, I wish Him the best.

Some people know that Lost My dad to these things, and My mom just got home from a 3 month trip to ICU, and rehab. She now has a O2 machine at home and several backup tanks. also she has been diabetic for years, but after this last episode she now has to take the shots. Of coarse that's only 2 parts of everything else that goes with it.

Yep, I too suffer with COPD, so given some of My bad habits, and I'm sure with the nature of the work We do, It's only a matter of time for me, if I don't start trying harder to make some changes. I've been pretty bad off a time or 2, and wasn't even able to get out of bed, much less work for a few months. Like someone said though, with each such incident the damage to the lungs and heart gets worse. I have watched It happen first hand with both of My parents.

Anyway would like to hear the news on Kevin if anyone knows how he is doing. I hope he is recovering well.

Greg

Hello everyone, this is Kevin's wife. Let me first say thank you for all the concern and well wishes. Kevin is doing better and getting a little stronger each day. That long time in the hospital bed really did a number on him, he lost nearly 40 pounds and could barely walk the day he came home. Still on the oxygen and at home resting now as per the doctor orders. He has an appt with his lung doctor soon so we'll know more then about when he can come off the oxygen and return to work. He is much better now though and can walk around the room, shower, shave without help. Thats a huge improvement. He should be back up and at it before too much longer.
