Can this be fixed or is it toast? Looks like the tip was changed from phenolic to leather

KJ, Is the man to talk to about that one. Most guys could save It as far as keeping It playable goes, but He can can give You a better idea on how to properly save the integrity of the design, and/or whether It's even worthwhile to do so, as He is authorized to do work for them.

Why not TRY to contact Predator and see if they will warranty it? Maybe call them, as they never responded to a simple question I sent them(after filling out their lengthy contact BS) by email..

If im not mistaken, the BK2 shafts have a carbon fiber pad under the tip. These shafts become very vulnerable to cracking like pictured after that pad is removed. I have seen this happen on more than one occasion. The warranty sticker on the shaft even says that if the tip is replaced, do not allow the cue repair guy to remove the pad. If the Carbon Fiber pad is removed, the warranty is then voided.

Agreed. I'm thinking since the tip has been changed it was done incorrect.

It certainly looks repairable, but I also think anything that could be done would have an effect on the shafts performance.

FWIW, I had one that I left the pad intact and put a WB tip on. Ferrule imploded maybe 50 breaks later. The ferrule is waaaaaaaay too thin for a break cue.

You don't have a cracked ferrule, you have a completely split ferrule and a cracked shaft. I can't believe nobody has mentioned the shaft is cracked. The crack doesn't show on both sides though, so that shaft/tenon probably isn't fully split. IMO it is repairable, though getting the tip and "ferrule" off to inspect the extent of damage is needed. I know what ferrule material I would use for replacement, but I suppose KJ would be the best person to give you an idea how to restore it to its original (predator design) state.

i agree with kelly. the shaft is structurally destroyed. any talks about repairing anything with that shaft whether it be tip or ferrule is moot. i have shot with predator shafts of all types over the last decade plus some and not until the last few years have i had 4 different shafts split. as recent as 2 months ago a shaft split sent it to predator. they warranty replaced it, although my original had a moori and the new one had a everest....well ive had the new shaft a few weeks and thats cracked down the middle also....pretty annoyed that i have to spend additional money ontop of premium for their products who in my opinion have decreased steadily over the years in quality

I can't stand here and defend the construction quality of Predator BK2 shafts
because I have nothing to do with the manufacturing process.
It's a good shaft as long as the warranty stipulations are adhered to.
The shafts are warranted as long as the pad is left intact.
It's a mystery to me why anyone would want to remove it when the results are obvious.
The OP's shaft can be repaired but I doubt Predator will touch it now.

what i did to one of these that i smashed some time ago (I break Hard) i made a 3 inch tennon out of purple heart and installed it in the hollow shaft then made a 3/4 ferrule from a cue ball and put a hardend waterbuffalo tip on it. it broke so damn hard lol
this was on a bk1

id do it again tho as i felt it was a improvemnt

The ferrule also looks like it has been replaced at some point as it doesn't look like an original one from Predator. Just my observation

It is definitely structurally compromised, but I'm not willing to say it is destroyed. I think it is probably repairable to an acceptable level of performance. Trent basically stated what the likely repair is, but the specific details of that repair are critical given the crack in the shaft.

Yes it can be repaired.
I can do this repair if you like.
Send me an e-mail for pricing and turn around time.
As KJ stated when the pad was removed the warranty went with it.

The picture was so good, that I just figured It was a given that the shaft was cracked too, or I would have mentioned It. Your correct It is repairable, but some people may go about It in different ways. Holding It together with a hose clamp, Putting a tenon in It, squeezing glue in the crack, and clamping It together is the way some people may go. If You use a short shoulder at the beginning of the ferrule It may go a long way to help prevent the shaft from cracking anymore. I have even done that Myself on occasion by request with older Preds that were small, and out of warranty, but It does deviate from the original design. Some people may like the difference where as others may not. It would still be playable though. It may be possible to save the design as well, but It would require some dis-assembly to determine the full extent of the damage. I can think of a few ways to go about it.

Greg

I'm going to strongly suggest that you send it to a qualified repair-person to have this addressed.
This is not a DIY event.
A good lathe and a man that knows how to run it are mandatory.
It would also help if they had a basic understanding of the design.
