Elephant

Type of game: Elephant is mix of rotation, continuous 14:1 and banks. Opening rack is played in reverse rotation until a player makes 8 points (one point per ball). After 8 points has been reached by one player all balls are eligible for both players. Once each player reaches 45 points they must bank the last 5. All shots during the game are call pocket, including the break. All illegally pocketed balls are spotted at the foot spot. Illegally pocketing ball is a foul.

Balls used: standard 15 with cue

Table: 5X10 (or any table you can find).

Object of the game: Score 50 points

Opening rack: 13 at head, 14 and 15 at corners, one ball in center. Once down to one single ball left on table, rack 14 balls as in 14:1.

Penalty for fouls: minus one point and ball is spotted at the foot spot. If more than one ball is illegally pocketed it is minus one point per ball and all balls spotted inline (like one pocket) starting at the foot spot and going to end rail. If player has no points and fouls, then a minus one and that player owes a ball to be spotted at the end of their inning after he/she makes a legal ball.

Rules of play:

Opening break: Same as BCA One Pocket.
First rack: Same as BCA 9/10 ball until 8pt. mark is reached by a player.
After 8pt. mark, same as BCA 14:1 continuous.
Once a player reaches 45pts. Same as BCA Banks.

I just made it up so what the heck. Hope you like it.

sounds very complicated... it seems like it would take a long time to play one game...

Complicated? not really, but it does take more time than nine ball, a lot more.
I like it because in the first 8 points lots of moving going on, then boom it's off to the races.

I like the idea. I haven't tried it, but it seems like it has a lot of elements that might make it exciting to watch and play. One pocket is one of the greatest games, but boring to watch for most people. Banks are fun to watch but too hard of a game in general. This has a lot of different shooting skills to it. I will try it someday.Good Luck.

I play a version when I'm practicing; rack all balls like 8 ball. decide which end pocket that all the stripes will go in and the other end pocket all the solids must go in. Break as in 8 ball. call pocket all the way even on break or kicked in. each ball is worth 1 pt. The catch is that the 8 ball must go in either end pocket opposite from the side you are potting balls and must be banked. any fouls ball gets respotted. I normally do three games highest score wins.

This idea sounds fun and entertaining, but how is the player that is trailing say 45 to 33 supposed to catch up? By this time the game has changed to banks. I've always liked playing combination races though. We mainly do 9ball, 8ball and banks or 9ball, 1p and banks.

This game doesn't do well for a practice game, in my opinion because of the strategy in the beginning, a lot of safety and trying to bury your opponent with extra points. Also the spotted balls add a dimension that you normally don't run into.

But once the 8pt. mark is hit the gloves are off.

If your trailing a lot and your opponent is on banks, the only way to catch up is if they miss and you don't. :)

The way I read the OP's rules, each player must bank his last 5 points. So if you are down 45-33 then your opponent is on banks but you are still playing straight pool. I would suspect catching up is fairly easy and between two players of similar speed it will usually come down to the banks portion.

Just curious as to why the first segment is REVERSE rotation?

Also, how did you come up with the name Elephant? If it catches on people will call it Elephant Ball - and there is already a product by that name.

Why reverse rotation, it's like a count down to the 14:1 portion.
I didn't know about the Elephant Ball products. I called it that because it has all the major games in it. Large on skill set.
