I've been playing for like 8 yrs, 5 seriously. I just got my first cue a few months ago. I started playing pretty good then hit a wall. I picked up a bar cue last night and didn't lose a game all night. My stick has a 314-2 w a kamui black soft. I like thinner shafts and think maybe a z2 would help but I'm not quite sold on the low deflection shaft thing as I did the pepsi challenge w a house cue vs my predator and they hit VERY close to the same( 2 tips of spin all the way down the 9 footer) my mentor/ teacher STILL plays w a house cue and he can't get used to 2peice sticks either. I'm at a loss, I spent a lot of money on this cue and I expected more.

If your struggling with the 314-2 ,then i wouldnt get the z-2 , because any mistake is emphasized,, I have a OB cLASSIC 12.75, AND IT HAS GREAT FEEL AND LOW DEFLECTION, maybe thats a shaft you shoud consider ..

Thanks I was more talking about the width as I abhor better w a thin shaft. My stroke and tip placement isn't the problem right now

Yes you can

Some times it takes trying out different cues to find out what works best for you. what weight do you like also consider ballance point. Ballance of a cue has a great deal to do with how a cue feels. what I have found that works best for me is a 18.5 to a 19.5 oz. cue with a ballance point from
17.5 to 18 inches from the butt of cue with shaft screwed on.
I have owned and played with over 200 cues in the last 10 or 12 years. If you can't come up with a solution pm me and I will send you my phone number. I can help you out. jmo, hope this helps, john

I think

it is all in your head. That soft tip you have might be part of the problem.
And house sticks usually never have a soft tip on them, they usually put medium or hard tips on them so they will last. You just haven't found the right 2 piece cue for you yet.

I think you play with what you're comfortable with, be it a house cue or a $3,000 custom cue. I've been playing for 37 years and I played 20 years before I bought my first 2 piece cue (Joss and I still have it). Now I play with a Black Boar and a Gilbert Jump/Break. For me, I love the search. I've owned a lot of cues but nothing plays like my Black Boar. I'll keep trying to find something that plays better.

I am not sure what it is, but I know it's different than the other guys. If I had to guess I would say it is the wooden joint?

I know some good local players that play off the wall (with house cues).

Going from a house cue (which has a quick, chunky taper, and is a 57inch cue) to a predator shaft and a 58inch cue is a huge difference.
It takes a lot of players months to adjust to the predator coming from a standard shaft. It sounds like its not the 2-piece cue that is the problem, but the predator shaft.
I've played with long taper standard shafts for 40 yrs and have never adjusted to a predator....so i use standard shafts (74 JOSS and 98 Bob Frey pete and a 2006 Bob frey custom cue).

I would suggest that you go to a cue maker with a house cue you like and get him to make you a 2-piece cue just like the house cue. If you play well with something, why change? If it ain't broak, dont fix it...lol.

I am going to go out on a limb and say That you have not spent the time to adjust for the low-deflection-ness. Every shot with sidespin is (well) simply different. The CB takes off with less deflection, and then swerves the same amount on its way to the OB.

Suggestion: Take all the sidespin out of your game for a 4 hour practice session and see if your game does not come around. If it does not--then dump the cue (or shaft) as you will never get used to it. If it does, then slowly, over the period of a week, add spin back into your game while practicing, a little at a time, so that you don't loose the feel developed earlier.

Could be you just aren't a laminated shaft fan, adjusting to the deflection of a standard shaft better. Ever tried a standard solid maple shaft?

I know good players who prefer the regualr standard shaft over laminated...it's all subjective, all about what works well for you.

In most cases house cues are thicker in the butt then a two piece cue. That may be what you like but don't realize it. It would not have to be much .020 may be all it takes. About a year ago I took the butt of my cue down a little. Not much but all of a sudden it was a different cue and I liked it better. Take a house cue you like and really measure it up and see what it is. Somewhere in there is a reason you feel better with it. I don't think it is just in your mind, there is a reason..

i always go back to a bar cue when im in a slump because it makes me use a little less english. maybe thats what you are doing...
