New Player, Kinda?

Hello, I am new here and I just wanted to share and get some feedback. I am a pool table tech by trade and a player at heart. I was taught how to work on pool tables by my dad, he owned 3 pool halls in CA before passing away, and he also was a pro caliber player. Growing up I was always in a pool hall running around while my dad was hustling somebody. Thing is when he was alive I had no interest in playing at all, sure I'd shoot around and he taught me a couple things but I really didn't learn much from him, not his fault. Now I have fallen in love with the game and wish I would have watched and learned from him. Like I said I work on pool tables so I came across a table a couple months ago and started playing. I realized I could make shots and about a month ago started playing everyday for about 4-5 hours. I can't get it out of my head. I just signed up for a league that starts this Thursday and I am excited to get some competition going. The thing I struggle with is that I don't think I am progressing as fast as I should. I don't know if I'm being too hard on myself or what. I can make balls pretty consistantly, I now understand angles and english, I have broke and run 4 racks so far, and I can beat all my friends. I want to be the best, and it's kinda frustrating that I'm not yet. I know, it's only been a month and I need to be patient but it's hard. What did you guys tell yourself when you first started playing to keep from feeling like you're not progressing fast enough? Am I progressing ok so far?

You can measure progress by how comfortable you are when around the pool sharks.

The first stage is predictability, you know the shark will say something on an important shot, and you know how you will react, but can you control your reaction or ignore him?

The second stage is enjoying the effects of sharks on your opponent. If you don't think it advantageous that your opponent gets sharked that is great.

The third stage is feeling comfortable enough to understand why a person is sharking and counter shark meaning completely ignoring and not even noticing the shark, playing in the zone.

(Great post for a newbie. )

I dont really get distracted while I'm playing. I'm more affected by nerves if anything. I haven't played alot so playing around people I get kinda nervous. That usually goes away after a couple games though.

It will come ! Just think of it as being on a ladder. You pick up a stick Learn a few shots go up two steps on the ladder. Then you start to learn english you go down a step on the ladder because now your throwing some shots offline with your new found english. Then you learn how to control the english & make the shot. Now you just went up the ladder 2 steps again. Just remember everytime you think you know it all somebody shows you different. JUST KEEP ON ENJOYING & LEARNING :-)

Just keep in mind that when you go down on the ladder You will eventually go up higher then when you went down.

I think my hardest step was the Mental stage. Once i was past that I went up 3 steps on the ladder!

I can't tell you how tall the ladder is But it does seam to be never ending LOL

Part of learning new skills and shots is there will be a slight step backward as you incorporate new things into your game. Play people better than yourself. It's a journey. You never arrive, just keep learning. Otherwise we would all be masters!
