Help with a cue problem please?

Hello all,

I have recently noticed that my cue (custom made) has been making a very different sound when I hit a ball and that when I hit the full cue against the palm of my hand at the joint it vibrates alot making a quite loud sound. No visible part of the cue seems to be loose or out of position.

I have tried different shafts and tightening the butt cup or removing it with no noticable difference. The cue has not been dropped or missused in any way that could have damaged it.

Cue specs: ivory joint, 3/8-10, cue is 6 years old and I am the original owner

Any ideas what the problem might be? All help is very appreciated in advance.

PS I will ofcourse be sending the cue to the cuemaker if I don't find an answer, I am just trying to find out what it might be to avoid sending the cue from Europe to the USA for something that's possibly easy to fix

Check the weight bolt first. It may just be loose. The other possibility is the a joint. It is the spot between the forearm and the handle of the cue if that is the case than you will have to have some one qualified to repair it. Good luck!

Thank you for your quick reply.

I don't think it's the weightbolt as I have removed it and then screwed it back in place really tight. I guess I need to send it over to the cuemaker for a check :(

First of all tapping your cue against your hand proves nothing at all, only how it sounds when you hit the cue ball with the cus tip. I have many people come into my shop trying to explain to me that their cue is making a funny sound when they tap it side ways or against their hand. In most cases this sound is cause by the lip of the phenolic joint rubbing in a side ways motion that it will never do when striking the cue ball.

It is very important to remeber that Cue Sticks are not Musical Instruments and you will get no bennifit from using it in side ways manner like you would with a Guitar!!!!!:D

So in my opinion to fix the problem stop tapping the cue in manner that you do not use for shooting pool and your problem will be fixed.:)

JIMO:)

First of all thanks for taking the time to answer.

I have to say I agree with you, it's all about how the cue plays.

I do however need to add that I only started experimenting after I noticed increased vibrations when hitting balls. It just doesn't sound or feel as solid as it used to. I will give it sometime and play with it a few more days to make sure it's not my ears that need fixing :D

You really need to, if could be a number of things. The bad part is, shipping it with that ivory joint. That could just be a pain in azz if it get's flagged at Customs.

Thank you Michael, can you provide any details on what the law for shipping ivory states? Would it not make a difference that I would be getting the cue back? Any advice would be appreciated

The law says, your basically screwed and should not have ordered a cue from the States with anything ivory in it. If you didn't know, your Cue maker should have just for the reason, Some day, it might have to come back. Now for that wonderful gentleman who works at the Customs in Alaska, he takes his job real serious and if he flags the shipment and finds ivory or an exotic wrap on that cue, Chances of getting it back are slim, but he will be more than happy to fine the person you are shipping the cue too. So with that being said, if you have to ship it back and now that you know what might happen,
Ship Postal, Use the cue makers direct name,
Do not put. Custom cues, just the persons name, this may help avoid any initial spark of interest. Ship Post office, I could suggest a couple more things but then I would be advising you to break the law, so I cannot. Especially because the Customs official in Alaska watches AZ Billiards.
This is what I know for sure
I did a favor for two guys and the cue had ivory in it from the 1940's. Even with a written letter from the original Cue maker, Stating where and when the ivory came from, I got fined because it was addressed to me, Customs didn't care where the ivory came from even with documentation. Customs suggest that you could file for a permit to ship a cue with ivory in it, Please take note, they have no intentions of approving it but what it will do is give them a reason to flag your name and watch anything you ship out of the Country. NICE HUH!

If there is no ring where the wrap meets the forearm it is most likely the end grains being glued together. They seem to want to start buzzing over time. But it only does it when tapped on the side and not when shooting and is nothing to worry about. Don't risk shipping the cue over here. Contact Keith Auld or one of the other cuemakers in your country and have them look at it.
