shaft finish

I have read here that some CB do not put the exact same finish on the first few inches of the shaft as they do on the butt.

Is that true? If so what is on the shaft?

I have been finishing them both the same so they come out the same size at the joint. I finish cut and sand the butt joint to 840/842 then match the shaft to it. The shaft is about 870 when I match it. My finish sanding mandrel is 850 and I use it on both the shaft and the butt. It seems to work fine. Does anyone finish the butt and the shaft when they are screwed together? (I don't)

Is there an easier/better way?

thanks

There's nothing wrong with using the same finish on the area that you mention.

In Chris Hightower's video on finishing he mentioned that at one time he used cyanoacrylate (CA, superglue) on the shaft but Cue Cote on the butt.

That is the main reason I posted this.... it seems to me that the different finishes would not look the same. Maybe you just can't tell by looking as long as the joint matches in size.

I still do this. And you would be hard pressed to tell the difference as long as you buff both of them to a mirror shine.

Chris,

Do you still match the size on the shaft joint to the butt joint in your finish sanding?

Do you just build the the shaft CA finish to match the butt?

thanks

I use carbide joint masters/sanding mandrels to match shafts to butts.

Do you cut the shaft joint to the same size as the butt or build up the finish to match the size?

What finish do you use on the butt?

Kim

i build my finish up a couple thousandths to match the butt section fairly easy as long as your lathe runs nuts and everything is concentric on your tapering machine.

as far as my finish......... well you will have to buy one of my cues and guess lol:thumbup:
