I was just wondering if anyone could explain how the term shortstop came to be used in the world of pool?

This has been asked many many times before and there are different answers. The one i like is that these local heros were just 'short stops' for the better road players/pros, meaning it didn't take them long to bust them and move on

From what I've read it was borrowed from Baseball.
If the pitcher's position is considered to be the most important on the team then the position of shortstop is thought to be the second most important.
The reason, of course, is the shortstop is more dynamic than any other position in that more balls are hit to that position, as well as the need for that player to cover both second and third bases. This similarity exists in Pool, as well.
If the road players, or Professionals, are likened to a pitcher then the second tier players (the eight or nine speeds) are characterized as shortstops.
I myself, have been called a right-fielder. :)

Nuts, guess that makes me third string water boy!

Shortstop

Many talented players, who dominated their hometown competition, decided to, "go on the road".
To see how they fared against other champions.
Just like baseball, many of them never got out of the infield because of a good "shortstop".
