I shoot left handed and every now and then some old time pool player will come up to me and talk to me just because Im a south paw. They always say how great it is that im a lefty and that lefties are the better shooters than righties.
Is there any truth that lefties do it better?

I didn't think that they made Cue's for left handed people. Must be a custome Cue !! :wink:

Could be a left brain right brain thing. It does make a difference which pocket you pick when playing one pocket.

I'm left handed and tell people my cue is too. They believe it. :confused:

I've also had people afraid to play once they found out I was left-handed. I can't say what the truth is because I've never been right-handed.

Because with way less bowling being done on the left side of the lane the oil conditions break down way slower. That being said the leftys have to do far less adjusting.

that's kind of my opinion on it too. I didn't think being lefty would be any advantage at all, but there seems to be a lot of people in my area that think there is an edge to it.

Anyone know why they would think that?

Being a lefty in bowling is an advantage generally because most bowlers are right handed. The oil track for right handers with break down quicker than on the lefties side. This is why it is an advantage in bowling.

In pool the only advantage I can think of is in hustling. When you challenge someone to a game and they refuse, you can pull the "I'll play you left handed then." Greedy suckers will fall for that line a lot! :)

This is true. The left side of the lane gets less play and the "shot" (oil pattern) will hold up longer. This is going to sound a little geeky, but I've also heard that it also has something to do with being in the northern hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere, things rotate clockwise (hurricanes, whirlpools, etc.), which is also the natural rotation a lefty puts on a bowling ball. The same applies for a righty in the southern hemisphere as things rotate counter-clockwise down there. I read that somewhere about 20 years ago.

That they will - without ever considering that the person may be left-handed to begin with! :thumbup:
 
I have read somewhere and posted that before: they say left-handed people are more gifted in regard to billiard games. They learn faster, pool is "natural" for them. But if we take two players of about equal skills, it hardly depends whether they are lefty and righty, nobody has an edge just because of their nature.
Also it may have to do something with imagination, lefties could be more inventive at the table, go for creative safety shots or returns. But as far as application of their skills, all players are equal.
