Viking R-70 Cue

I don't think it's 1970 or even close to it. I've seen cues from that time period and it doesn't look right to me. Ring work looks newer, for one thing. Been re-wrapped, I'd say.
 
I'd like to get one of those vintage three-pointer Vikings with the logo under the clear ring. I agree that $1,500 is way too high.

The seller says it's a 1970 model - I don't think so. Wico blanks were not even made until '73 or '74. He calls it a "R70", but I don't think Viking ever made an "R70". Maybe the resident classic Viking expert could chime in here :p

The seller is close on the date. It's the early version of a cue they made exactly the same through several different model lines. The only actual difference is that the very earliest ones had "binders cloth" instead of stamped foil under the acrylic window. (bumper styles changed and material colors changed here and there)
Gorden originally had a nearby book bindery print his labels on binders cloth. The bindery went out of business at about the same time gordon moved his operation from the pool hall in Stoughton to the converted motel in Madison. that was 1968. When they started back up they had to switch over to the foil method.

The wico points were first made in the late sixties. Viking was buying them at that time, but went on to make their own.

Don't know if I copied and pasted the ebay listing correctly, but really like the looks of the Viking R-70 cue. Did a search, but didn't find anything. Does anyone know any details about this model cue?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Randy with all honesty the seller on ebay either knows nothing about cues or he is fishing for some type of sucker because that cue is not nearly worth anything near what he is asking.

The cue in the picture is also not an R-70, it is either a Z170 ( 1978 ) , B170 ( 1981 ) or an A200 ( 1983 ) and I suspect that the cue is actually an A200.

This often occurs with Viking cues because they made so many similar models over the years with different model numbers and slight changes.

The oldest model that looks similar is the model X225, however, that model did not have a bumper, only the later models.

In the condition the cue is in, in my opinion it is worth around $450 to $550 if you find the right buyer.

I asked Darcy Hart at Viking for an I.D as I mentioned, that is the earliest version of that style cue;

What a beautiful cue!

In looking back at our catalogs, the cue pictured is model R170.
This model was in production from 1974-1976 and retailed for $170. The value of this cue today, in mint condition, would be in the ballpark of $900-$1,000.
