I had a major breakthrough last night!

Ok so I've been playing seriously now for a few months and I finally had my big breakthrough last night. Well, it started on Thursday in league. I had ball in hand and I chose to play position for the next shot by spinning the cue instead of giving myself the angle to play natural shape and after the game one of my teammates pointed it out to me. He explained that it's best to play natural shape when possible. So yesterday I really focused on this and what do you know I'm playing shape damn near perfect and I'm making almost all of my shots, shots are alot easier when you played good position. It's like I have easy shot after easy shot now. I woke up this morning and ran 3 racks back to back, first time ever, just because I am trying to play natural shape. I feel great about where my game is going now and I was so excited I had to share.

On another note I have loosened my grip up alot and it's made a big difference in my accuracy. I now let my pinky hang and I swear I am shooting straighter then ever. My mom recommended this as it's the way my dad held his cue and she was right on.

Thanks for reading, enjoy your 4th!

Very cool. Continued good shooting!

(Still waiting for a breakthrough.... :eek::p:D )

congratulations on your breakthrough... I'm waiting on the breakthrough that allows me to close out the set when i'm tired

Congrats on not just your playing but the revelations . Moms are great for advice. When you can get some pool advice makes it that much sweeter. ...she was right on

Played for a couple months and ran 3 racks, that remarkable!

Well I grew up in and around a pool hall. My dad was a player so I have picked up a cue before recently but I never took it serious or even tried to learn the game. So I say playing for a couple months meaning seriously playing and trying to learn the game. I play alot, I have a table in my home that I got in April so I usually play between 3 and 5 hours a day. Like I said it's the first time I've ran multiple racks period but I'm working on being able to do it consistently. I think my little breakthrough will help me get to that point but we'll see. Like everyone I'm still learning.

What do you mean what natural shape? Did you use little to no english?

Natural shape is being able to use center ball or somewhat center ball without much English to play position. Basically without any fancy strokes like a power draw or a force follow.

That's awesome dude. I have similar experience as I played pool in early high school school for fun with friends every week. I learned to pot the balls well and learned to use draw and follow, but it wasn't until that I met someone (100 ball straight pool player) who taught me the concepts of position play. Had a breakthrough as well :) Before I'd try to spin the cue ball to play position on every shot then I realized I am not getting position. It looks cool, but not practical.

Thanks and yes moms are great for advice. She knows pool too she was a pretty good player herself so she gives me good advice. Gotta love a mom who can talk shop with you.

Yeah exactly. It's so much easier being able to just make the ball and not have to do much to get shape on the next ball.

yup! More work on the cue ball = less accuracy, unless the position play requires you to come off the rail at a certain angle to play a "small area" shape. But generally in 9 ball with a wide open table, it rarely needs to be done.
