Question 4X8 case?

Personally I own an It's George 2X4 case that I got 20 years ago. Which I should have gotten the 3X6 back then, in any case.

It is a great cue case but I need to buy another case to store my other cues. Maybe even take more then a break and play cue to the pool hall. I have been looking for an inexpensive 4X8 cue case. After some researching on the internet and having narrow it down to two cases.

Both cases are black, uses a latch to close the top, which I like better then the zipper and they are both under $140. First case is a Sterling 4x8 Black Rolling Case and the second case is a J&J PC48WF Pool Cue Case which also has rollers. I am getting older and lazier so the rollers will help. :grin:

Does any AZ member have an opinion on which one is better and why? I would also like to see a picture of the inside of the cases. I could not find even one picture on the internet for the same model. Thanks for your help.

I cannot imagine getting so old as to where I couldn't carry a 4X8 case into the poolhall. Rollers??? C'mon man, we're in Texas fer cryin' out loud!!! :grin:

OK, to tell you the truth, it is not about getting to old and lazy. It is more about having one to many at the pool hall to carry it correctly. So dragging an inexpensive case with rollers is a lot better. You would be mad if you saw what kind of marks that are on my It's George case when I had a few drinks. :grin:

The Sterling has the wheels on the front which is WAY WAY WAY better because when you lean the case against the wall, table, chair etc.. it STAYS in place. Also the bottoms are more durable.

The interior is a recessed foam core. It's nicer than the J&J because I insisted that it be nicer. This case is made by JiaSen and I have worked with them for the past three years helping them to upgrade their quality.

Also the new ones are done with a single sewn seam in the back which makes for a much nicer appearance.

Buy both and send back the one you don't like. I bet you keep the Sterling.
 
P.S. I NEVER drag my cases BUT when I owned Instroke I kept seeing all these damaged bottoms from the USA and I couldn't figure it out. IN Europe I never saw the same thing. So when I moved back to the States in 99 I started playing more and I saw many people walking to their matches and dragging their cases along the floor. I honestly do not understand this behavior at all.

However the wheels definitely solve that problem for anyone who drags their case.

In my defense, I do carry my case into the pool hall like normal. I only drag my case when I leave and had more then a few to drink. :rolleyes:

I have always thought it would be a good idea to invent a nylon and plastic piece that can be tied to the bottom of the cue case. It needs to be rolled on the sides and have a flat bottom. So people that drag their cue cases would not damage the bottom of it. Once it is worn out, they can just replace it with a new one. Having different color will also help for those that like a change. If you or anyone invents this, please send me a free sample each year for life. :grin:

:-) It's all good. I wasn't really ragging on anyone just relating what I observed. I think a good idea for people who like to drag their cases might be to put one or more of the furniture coasters on the bottom. You know the sliders available at places like Home Depot. They might even be formable with heat. Put them in the oven for a little bit and see if they can be molded around the bottom.

I have thought of many solutions but they were all ugly and so I have consistently resisted doing it.

I will see if I can find the pix of the Sterling ones. They look WAY better. What you see in the pix you showed is when the interior shifts UPWARD and pushes the fabric liner up. Here is the problem when that happens to the J&J cases: The springs in the bottom fall out and the cue is hitting the wire pieces and the springs are now stuck and the whole thing needs to be taken apart to fix it.

Ours are sealed at the bottom so that the springs cannot come out. Then the interior is secured with the bottom so that it doesn't move once it's in the case.

I would really appreciate it if you have a pix of the instead of the Sterling 4X8 Rolling case. I have only been able to find the pix for the inside of a Sterling Wave 4X8 case. If they both have the interior then I know what it looks like.
 
New Sterling Case

I just my new Sterling rolling case. The outside was better then excepted but not the inside of the case. It looks just like the J&J so it did not offer that much of a different.
All my cues and shafts are loose inside the case. I do not expect to be taking this case to the pool hall. The case no only going to be used as storage. If the inside of the Sterling case was better then it would have been a great buy. I would not recommend anyone buying the Sterling rolling case.

You can send it back for a full refund. It may look like the J&J but it's definitely better quality. I didn't realize you were looking for a storage case or I would have recommended any of the cases found here www.sterlingcuecases.com

The one you have is done with a foam core interior and not with my JB Cases padded interior.

I thought you wanted a rolling case because you tended to drag the case when you had been drinking. I really think you should send it back and get one with a padded interior for storage.
 
Get the Sterling Wave 4x8 for cue storage or for taking to the poolhall. Inexpensive, lightweight, great interior, holds 31" butts, and decent looks (I prefer the solid black ;)). I have had 4 butts and 8 shafts in my case, but it took a little bit of careful work (definitely recommend watching the instructional video that John B. has out on loading/unloading the case). 4 butts and 7 shafts is a piece of cake to get in, and they will never touch one another.

I was not looking for a storage case but because of how loose the cues and shaft are in the Sterling 4x8 rolling case. It will not be able to take my abuse without some damage to the cues when I am drinking. I do not like returning stuff so I will keep the case and use it for storage.

If you talk to the people at Sterling, please tell them to make the inside of the Sterling 4x8 rolling case with you padded interior like the Sterling Wave 4x8. I would buy another one if it happens. :D

Anyone AZ member have a recommendation on a simple 4X8 case with a latch top? When I said simple, I mean no design on the leather or anything with a lot of rivets. Just a classic look like some of the older cases.

If they continue to make this style then I will see about changing the interior to our method.
