Need help acquiring ferrule material!

I'm on a quest to provide some objective data concerning ferrule materials. In particular, their Shore-D hardness rating. After countless hours of searching the forum for said info, all I can find is "this one hits softer than that one and harder than this one". Nothing to useful there. Furthermore, since most suppliers use their own names for what should be common plastics, tracking down that information has been fruitless.

What I need is for people to volunteer small pieces of ferrule rod so that I can send them to another forum member for some testing. Pieces don't have to be any longer than 1/2". It would be nice if they were un-drilled. I'd like to get as many samples as can be found. Only caveat is that they be plastic in nature. No bones or ivories!

So far I have Titan, Juma, Phenolic, Elforyn, and G10. Anything you guys can provide would be of tremendous help. Just post on here what you can provide and I will send you a PM later to finalize. Once the data has been compiled I will gladly post it on here for all to see and hopefully save the next newbie a few days of countless searching. :D

Cool idea. I have compiled a bunch of stuff written about ferrules throughout the Net. But its subjective and can be misleading. I just look for common info and then judge for myself.

A problem you'll most likely run into is that a hardness rating will not tell the whole story. Just like tips... although some are rated the same hardness, the functional characteristics are different. You'may need tests for things like tensile strength, compression, fracture point, deformation, rigidity, solvent/heat resistance, deflection, ease of machining, impact, etc.. You will also need to take measurements for several samples. I saw a Youtube video of a guy testing the hardness on LePro tips and they varied quite a bit, I imagine you'll find the same thing on some plastics.

You'll need to figure how you're going to qualify the results.

No matter what you determine I'd be interested in seeing the results.

Good luck!

I've probably installed thousands of lepros over the years, and test or no test there's not a doubt in My mind that they would test all over the place in a hardness rating. Not only in different sizes or batches of tips, but even within the same box from the same batches. It's kind of a extreme example but I suppose It does make the point well.

I'm guessing here, but more then likely you may see similar in plastics, maybe only more minute changes. Different batches can vary in many characteristics, and I imagine the hardness rating would be no different. It's possible that you could even get different readings throughout the same piece of rod. Quality control at the manufacturers could play into that, as well as equipment, and how well materials are mixed, layered, evenly distributed, dried/cooled, and so forth, but then I'm no plastics expert, just a user of products.

Chris,

I will send you a piece of un drilled Micarta scrap from my bandsaw box.

I would love to see comparsion numbers. Good Idea!

PM me your address.

Thanks,

Rick

Gentlemen - Thank you for taking the time to respond. I am fully aware that this isnt a scientific experiment, however, I think it's important to start somewhere. Yes there is probably some variation in material, but that variation can be worked with and recorded. Right now all we have is this one hits soft and another guy thinks it hits hard. It may, in the end, be hard to qualify the numerical data related to hardness but this information should serve as a foundation for any further inquiry.

Chris

OK I've got -

Westinghouse MIcarta - Thanks Rick
Mason H micarta
Ivorine 4 and LBM - Thanks Brent!
Delrin and ABS - Thanks Jack!
Titan
Juma
Elforyn
Phenolic - Linen Rolled
G10
MPI and PVC - Thanks Bob!
Ivor-X - Thanks BRuppert

We're getting there! Anybody got any Ivorine 3 or Aegis 2? Saber-T or Porper?

Chris

Do you have a way to test the material with a hole drilled in it? A lot of the softer plastics come in tube form only.

do you have both g-10's....black and green.......I feel they are just a little different in hardness...I know they machine diff.

Chris - I was hoping to get rod form for most of it. However, if it has to be in tube form, if the material is cut length wise and then sanded flat on one face, then it should provide a large enough testing surface.

I have the green only. If you have a piece of black Id love to include it in the testing.

Sorry, meant to look last night to see what all I have but never went into the shop. I think most of the ferrules I have are drilled and tapped though.

I have some unmolested Ivor-X I can send you. Just PM me your address. If I have any others not on your list I'll let you know

ferrule material

I have Ivorine three somewhere in the garbage pail...also Grice ferrule if you want it.
