Somewhere between a regular shaft and a Predator.
Personally, I like them a lot. They have as much feel as a regular shaft, but deflect less.
I've tried everything from break shafts to the weird Predator z2 and own, or have owned, the following:
- Predator 314-2 shafts (still own, might want to sell now that I have the Players)
- Katana shaft (still own, meh, not bad, bot great)
- Lucasi Hybrid shaft (owned, didn't like the cue it was attached to)
- Mezz Hybrid Pro shaft (owned, loved it...stolen)
- Players PHX shafts (still own, amazing things for under 70 bucks I'd buy them at twice the price...they don't make 3/8X10 joints...grr)
- Helmstetter 1980s shafts (still own, great playing traditional shafts)
- Jerico shaft (still own, great playing traditional shaft)
- Carolina shafts (still own, stiff!!!)
- Duc Lam CM360 shaft (still own, nice stiff LD shaft)
- Gracio shaft (still own, amazing, Scott is a genius)
- Action shaft (still own, not bad...cue buzzes already, wife's cue)
- Lee Peppers shaft (still own, great shaft, great cue, great guy)
- Joel Dadivas shafts (still own, thick, play stiff as hell)
- and many others.
Out of all of them, the Gracio and Players are the best.
- The Predators deflect the least, but they feel dead when playing.
- I liked the Mezz a lot, it plays a lot like the Players shafts. It's built similarly too.
- The Gracio has a short ferrule and has amazing feel.
- The Players play just like the Mezz with tons of feedback and lower than standard deflection. These are the perfect balance for me with the perfect balance of stiffness and deflection. Others may like more or less deflection, more or less stiffness, etcetera.
My recommendation would be find people with different shafts and play with them. I bought mine because I bought into the hype and learned for myself what I liked and what I didn't like. To me, playing with the z2 is like re-learning the game. Playing with the 314-2 makes me feel off somehow.
All the above said, nothing will make you good without tons of practice.
