McDermott cues shaft joint

I am wondering if all McDermott cues have the wooden shaft joint?And if anyone has said type of cue, does this affect the play of the cue any? And also have you had any issues with the threads in the shaft?I am just curious.. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and smooth strokes!!!!

I assume that you're referring to a type of joint where the shaft threads are cut into the shaft wood, without the use of a metal or plastic threaded insert. This type of joint is extremely common. I believe it is most often seen with pins that are 3/8 x 10 or radial. I think that many if not most McDermott cues use the 3/8 x 10 pin. I have one that is over 30 years old.

A lot of people will say that the pin size and threads (wood vs. insert) affect the hit of a cue significantly. For me, the difference is slight.

As far as issues are concerned, as long as you're reasonably careful not to cross-thread or over-tighten, threads that are directly into the shaft wood are perfectly stable, reliable, and long-lived.

I've had three D models and seen countless others (C and D models and later, more modern models) and all were flat-faced wood-wood...even the "stainless" joints were flat-faced wood-wood with a stainless sleeve. The hit is very nice. Solid, with lots of feed back ("good" vibration). I prefer an old school 5/16 X 14 piloted stainless joint myself, but that's really just a personal thing. I have nothing against the McDermott style joint and still enjoy shooting with them. I never saw a problem with the wood threads in the shafts (my jump/break is a McDermott, no issues, there, either); they hold up very well, even after decades of constant use. The only problem I ever saw was the early D models would suffer a little bubbling in the laminated rings on the shaft's joint, but that got corrected in later models (and of course, McDermott fixed those that did under warranty at the time). A lot of top custom makers prefer to put out a flat-faced wood-wood joint similar to McDermott's cues.

Thank you that is what i was referring too. I am a very enthusiastic player, however i have mostly only shot with one piece house cues and borrowed others two piece cues. I am just doing some studying and research before i invest in my own cue. Thaks again for your reply.. Smooth strokes!!

I have a C-14 McDermott that is from their 1980-84 line and I haven't had a single problem with the wooden shaft joint. I have shot with it and broken THOUSANDS of racks over the last 25+ years and the shaft joint and threading still seem to be good as new.
