Does anyone else think 9% is a bit much?

I realize auction houses get 15% and up.

I don't know, I just don't like it. Yah, I don't have to use Ebay.
 
I too think it sucks!

I think it's in response to all those sellers who price their product too low, and then charge too much shipping. They pay fees on the selling price, but make it up in the shipping.

I'm with ya Randy

I think I said this before on here but I think them charging ANYTHING for shipping is BS. I can't believe its even legal. How can they charge for a service they don't provide?!

Other than simple greed, this is the logical conclusion, and I agree. I once saw a piece of art listed overseas somewhere. $10 buy it now, $250 shipping.

One way to avoid it may be to list it as local pickup, then mention in the ad to email you about shipping.... and build the cost of shipping into the price.

I've seen 2 identical items listed by the same seller priced completely differently.

One was $500.00 with $50.00 shipping, and the other was $200.00 with $350.00 shipping.

With the old way, they paid way less in fees for the second method.

They could have gone to a method of using calculated shipping instead of allowing the seller to dictate it, but there are ways around that too. They can specify the weight too high and cause the shipping estimate to be high. Which does the same thing.

I guess they will get what they think is theirs no matter what

It doesn't have anything to do with a ebay shipping service... they just want a cut of what you are charging your customers to ship their packages. It's highway robbery and should be illegal... and probably is if someone would challenge it. Ebay actually wants the seller to eat the shipping cost and ship for free. That's what this is all about... another rip off sceme by ebay. It cost to list an item ( listing fee). It cost to sell that same item ( final value fee). It cost for more than 1 photo of that item. Now you have to pay them a percentage of what it cost you the ship the item and then, it cost you for the buyer to pay you for that item. There goes your profit my friend. It's not worth it to sell on ebay!

People can, and do use their shipping services. One can pay for the shipping charges, print labels etc. thru ebay, supposedly for discounted rates too. I would'nt know, because i've never used it. I can see them charging some kind of surcharge for this service, if used, but how can they charge me for it, when i don't? B.S.

You forgot they own Paypal now, so you get charged to send money:)

Inside of Ebay you're right, the recipient pays the fee because Ebay made it against their rules to charge the buyer. Outside of Ebay, the seller oftentimes adds the fee to the purchase price if the buyer pays via paypal.

Ebay bought Paypal on Oct 3, 2002 for about 1.5 billions dollars. They were not always owned by Ebay.

It is also against the rules outside of Ebay, they can just enforce it better on there. It is in Pay-Pals terms of service.


4.6 No Surcharges. You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as a payment method. You may charge a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services, as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge and is not higher than the handling fee you charge for non-PayPal transactions.

Right, I don't keep up with the history. By "always" I meant as long as I've been using them since 2004. Regardless, The recipient pays the fee. However, If your buyer agrees, you can send them a PayPal invoice and circumvent the fees, except PP

Good information. It would be more marketable to offer a discount for paying with something other than paypal than it is to charge a buyer to use paypal. Six of one, half dozen of the other.

I realized this when a seller said they wanted me to pay their paypal fees...bad marketing. They should have hid it in my cost. :grin: I'd be more likely to pay with cash if I thought it was benefiting me to do so.

My two cents (less paypal fees),
