Just saw on the news that the I-64 bridge is out from Louisville to New Albany Indiana, the site of the Horseshoe Casino where the DCC is held. They said they expect it to be out of commission for 6 months for the repair of some serious cracks in the structure. This will definitely cause some problems for the Derby this year as I believe it's the only way to cross the river near the site. This could be a real mess!

I checked google maps and the reroute for bridge closure adds 4 minutes  to the commute. 35 minutes versus 31 via bridge. To help I printed the directions below. No need for everyone to have to look this stuff up when its been done already!! Link Below and Directions!!

I64 Bridge

As another poster stated, using I65 adds 4 minutes, but not with this bridge out of commission. All of its roughly 90,000 cars per day are now on that I65 bridge. We are working to get traffic patterns situated and are getting better every day so far. By the time the Classic gets here it may not be as bad and the 6 month is just a guesstimate at this time. It may be more, it may be less.

Your best bet will be to hunker down at the casino and not travel within an hour or two of peak times.

Bridge

As of today they are telling us locals that it will be another 6 months in repair work (give or take). Peak times are still a traffic nightmare so take that into account.

We were discussing this the other night at the pool hall and one guy made an excellent point that once you are there, there are plenty of places (restaurants, attractions, etc.) in southern Indiana that it won't matter.

Hhhhhmmmmm well I was just going to leave after work 630am Wednesday morning to head up from NC, but now I think I'll call in sick Tuesday. The last thing I want to do after being awake for 24+ hours is to be stuck in a traffic snarl at the very end.

Sherman Minton Bridge Update

The work has begun on the bridge, but it looks like it will still be closed while the DCC is going on. If you are coming in from St. Louis way, you can still get to the New Albany exit that shoots you through town and out to the casino. If you are coming from Lexington KY way you will have to hit I65 North to I265 West then back over to I64 East (Left lane where I265 splits) and then down to previously mentioned New Albany exit.

There are several places to stay in New Albany (10 minutes away) for those of you who do not want to stay at the casino. There are also several restaurants on the Indiana side of the river in Clarksville, New Albany and Jeffersonville. I am sure you can google one of those and find everything you need. I just threw the city names up since most out of towners would not know what cities are close.

When I saw your Post I was think the Folk who put on the Derby had BANNED A BRIDGE use in pool like the ProJUSTaBridge at the Derby.

This is the easiest way without going through downtown and puts you right at the Sherman Minton bridge on the Indiana side, only and a few minutes.I travel this way a few times a week for my job,if anything changes I will update it.
