What is a "Short Spliced Point"?

I have read in a few places where it was explained that at such-n-such a time is where so-n-so builder moved to "short spliced points" and "mitered" veneers.

I see this referenced a few times in various places, including the Blue Book of Pool cues, but I don't understand what is meant by it.

Ho is a veneer mitered? And what is a short spliced point? Or a "spliced point" at all for that matter. I have read about splices under the wraps, etc.

Lastly, is there any book about cue building?

I have built a few chess boards and guitars. I know that anything that looks simple is indeed a labor of love, if not a matter of "measure 100 times...cut once." I know what a mitered joint is in woodworking, just not a veneer in chess cues. or a spliced point for that matter. Wish there was a book that explains it all.

You could copy and paste :scratchhead:

Oh, I see. You want Murray to take the time to show you all that you are looking for and then want him to take the time to copy and paste all of the articles and pictures to another forum because you don't want to take the time to register. Do you also have your wife cut up your steak because it is to much of an effort to do it yourself? This cue makers forum has become a joke from people wanting to be spoon fed every tidbit of information. Can no one do anything on their own anymore?

Isn't a forum, by nature and design, a place where people are spoon fed information? Almost literally? Someone asks a question or posts a topic, and others chime in.

Regardless, I did join. It wasn't any big deal. I'll read the links tonight after work. Just not sure where the cynicism and hostility came from, or it was at all warranted. All they asked for was a copy and paste, the gentleman explained why it wasn't that easy, and we moved on. No big deal.

And THANK YOU for the links. I went there and there is so much information and pictures that I'll have to make time to read it all. Can't wait. Thanks again!

Theres alot of work put into the forum and it answers all the questions you could have on the subject, i think that if one askes a question and then is supplied with the answers thats spoon fed enough.

It wasn't really hostility Bud. There is a certain Decorum in the Forum. I know, it doesn't make sense but I like how it rhymed.
It is held by the teachers and generally understood by the masses.

When a question is asked, any of the experienced cue makers can answer but very few to none will hold your hand and take you from A to Z without you doing most of the work yourself and learning from your mistakes much like they did when being self taught.

It also depends on the question that is being asked.

Murray wrote some excellent articles with pics at JA to answer peoples questions. He provided you with links to those articles and Dick expected you to do the rest of the work, as in doing whatever you had to do (register) to view them.

Dick is not mad at you, he just let you know what was going on in his world today. He has a busy schedule and still takes time to answer questions here and thru messages. He might seem like a big grumpy bear at times but he isn't really.

Hope this helps a bit and don't hesitate to ask more questions. The trick is often in how you word them.

Lastly, is there any book about cue building?

Yes there is. Chris Hightower wrote it and is available thru his web site.
It is almost mandatory these days if you plan on repairing or getting a start in building.
Even if you aren't interested in either of the two, the book itself will expand your knowledge in the world of pool cues and is a good read. Get it and if you decide not to keep it, it can be resold here at almost next to new price. Someone will always take it off your hands.

No, that wasn’t me that suggested he copy and paste. I was merely suggesting that tact is the better side of advice.

Personally, I went there and joined the site as soon as I saw the links. It was no skin off my back. The way I see it, if someone is willing to impart some hard-earned, hard-learned knowledge upon me then if I have to do a few extra steps than fine. That’s why I asked if there was a book on the topic, so I wouldn’t have to ask the question in the first place. I joined, immediately saw pictures and many words explaining my answers, and was satisfied. But I’m at work right now…still am.

I have spent hundreds of hours learning how to build the few things in life I have. I found I am extremely allergic to the oils in some exotic woods when building chess boards. It was either Ebony, Rosewood, or maple. So I’m unsure about trying to build anything. Nevertheless, I have a deep interest in how pool cues are made, the methods and methodology of them, and how different makers come to the choices they do regarding some of the variables inherent to cue design. Metals to be used, woods, and construction. I love what I have read about Bill Stroud and his “Ill show anybody anything” and the “nothing I do is proprietary” approach to building things. He always seemed to be willing to help anyone who had a genuine question. …And now he’s off kalooping somewhere. Where are ya Bill? Dammit!

In lieu of his sparse words, this forum seems rich with talented cue makers, true artisans of the craft. And I can’t imagine a better place to ask some of these questions. And remember, what seems basic and elementary to you may be an enigma to others (like myself).
So I do greatly appreciate the time that is taken to answer these questions. Remember too, for every question you answer, I would imagine there are hundreds of readers that benefit from your answers that never post on the thread. I have learned so much just searching through the threads of previous years.

So there ya go. I appreciate and value the time you guys take to answer my questions, and other people’s questions too. It is a forum, and a public place. Hence the usual assortment of crazy people from time to time. But some of us do sit up front in class and pay attention. 

It took less than 5 mins to register to see the info in the supplied links. And I am on the other side of the world lol
Too much for me to read today, so I bookmarked it for later.
Thanks for the links and sharing.
I can understand where Dick is coming from. I mean 5 mins.

You need to chill. First, the it is the OP who wants to know, not me. Are you also blaming the OP because he failed to google his question and decided to ask a billiards related question on a billiards forum? There is nothing more natural than for that information to exist on this forum as well, so that hopefully somebody will search it here on AZ rather than making a new thread about it.

Second, ever occurred to you that one may not want to register for yet another site? What is the point of linking to another billiards forum which requires registration?

It would have taken pretty much the same amount of time for him to copy and paste the material rather than doing the same thing for the links.

But thanks for your insults, I guess you must be feeling a little better now

Copy and Paste all that info when it already took a considerable amount of time to present it.

Wow, I can't believe that you weren't grateful to be able to read it let alone
expecting anything else.

Unfortunately, this is the type of hand holding and baby sitting that I was referring to.

True, but it was available on another forum. Sorry it wasn't here on your demand. The Inter Web is a big place. Sometimes a person gets to travel.

We will make note of your preferences the next time you post. Sorry for inconveniencing you today.

There's a button at the top of the page right between "new" and "links". It reads "search"....if you type in "short spliced point" I'd be willing to bet you'll get over 150 hits for those three words alone. Down the right hand side of what's shown you can narrow your search to the different categories the requested search falls under. If you're too lazy to even try that first why would anyone(other than Murray) be willing to use their precious time to help? If you have tried and failed to find the info you were looking for, my apologies.
Hope this doesn't sound too brash...I'd hate to be lumped into the same group as that rhncue guy....:nono:

Responses like this are why people are posting less and less here.

C'mon, really?

"Why would anyone be willing to use their precious time to help?"
Because someone asked for it. Why else? For some people this is human nature. And because this section is called, "Ask the Cuemaker"

And lastly, if Murray Tucker makes cues I am far more inclined to deal with someone who is helping me now, going out of his way to help a stranger, than someone who doesn't help. As any good businessman knows, everyone is a potential customer. And we act accordingly.
