A aggravating thing about handicap tourneys

Does everybody that plays handicaps have the guys that show up and place in the money until their rank is moved up, then you never see them again? They come cry that they are ranked to high, then once they come in the money several times get moved up then poof they are gone. Thing is these dudes could win at the higher rank. I guess it's just not easy enough money.

Yep.... I see it all the time.

Consider it the "Nature of the Beast" so to say. Handicap Systems can work, but seldom do. It has been my experience that those players who are closer in ranking tend to benefit from the handicap; however, if there is a larger gap between the two players' ratings, the upper rating usually wins. Example a 9 vs a 5, the 9 will usually (not always) win.

I agree with Double D. "You can't give a player any heart." I have competed against semi-pros to a race to 7 and have faired well in the past. For me, that might be winning four or five games, only to lose; however, I did get their attention (and from some players, compliments on my improvment and their respect as a shooter). If I can win four games against, let's say Shane Jackson, Marty Lawson, Shane Morrow, etc, Hell... I'm a happy camper (or they are being generous)

To quote I believe Wimpy Lassiter, "If you need weight, you need practice."

Just my opinion....

This seems pretty obvious to me. At least as far as local tourneys are concerned, it's nearly impossible to have a competition without some kind of handicap. You'd have a "tournament" with just the top 4 guys because the others aren't willing to play.

I have played so many other games with decent handicapping, it sucks that pool doesn't apply (except maybe straight pool).

Seen it plenty, but not as a player. I stayed away from tournaments as much as possible because of stuff like this.

Even money on the table, no spots. That's how I played. You wanna win? You make your balls.

Played one season in an amateur league years after I had "retired". Hated it. Too much crap, not enough pool.

The aggravating thing about handicap tourneys is the handicap, IMO.

The thing is our local room is in a small town in a rural are so you are not gonna get enough people to have a decent tourney unless it is a handicap.

Handicapping is the worst thing ever conceived when it comes to pool tourneys. The men come out to play to test themselves, to see their weaknesses, to beat another--or to lose on an even battlefield.
AMEN!!!

I refuse to play in leagues the majority are sandbagging crybaby's IMOA

I wonder if someone who runs state wide or regional tournaments wants to chime in on the difference in registered turnout (paid in players) between an 'open' only tournament and a tournament with 2 or more brackets (handicapped as high/low or Open/A/B/C/etc). Because without the turnout, you won't get casinos or pool halls donating their time and effort to making the tournament happen, and you won't see the tournament directors putting the time in either. You know what's worse than having a handicapped tournament? One where only 30 people shoot in it because it's been taken over by a handful of road players who demolish all the locals.

Yeah and there are a lot of guys who simply come onto forums to complain about the complainers.

That's what handicaps do. Even the battlefield.

It is the coward at heart who chooses to demonstrate his manly skills by endlessly crushing those who have not yet develop equal skills.

Golf: What's your handicap?

Tennis: What's your rating?

Drag racing: How many car lengths? ( or time on the light)

Horse racing: How much added weight?

How much, "Experience ," does a 5 get from an 8 in tournament situations
with no handicap? ZERO!!!

There are a couple of places in town that run tournaments this way. When I first went, I played pretty well for myself at the time and the next time I went I needed 3 more games - that's a pretty big spot in a race to 3. I was only an APA 5 at the time, so that meant possibly spotting better players anywhere from 1-3 games, or playing really good players heads up in a race to 6. The only way I was told that my handicap could drop is if I played and kept not placing.. there was no way I was going to go out of my way to spend money to maybe have a chance after a month of losing. I ended up going to another one of the tournaments a year or two later and my handicap had been cleared.

Sure, it can suck.. but, people keep going to those tournaments, so there's obviously a demand. Handicaps won't always work for everybody, but many of the people that use them find them helpful. As a friend says, who I grudgingly give certain spots to, I can always refuse the game if I don't like it..
