stroke drill

I have been trying a stroke drill where you place the cue ball and object ball two diamonds from the top rail and bottom rail diagonally.(mighty x) You then shoot the shot into the corner and try to make the object ball, and follow the ball in with the cue ball.(scratch) My question is, do you keep doing this shot everyday and your body and mind subconsciously learns how to do it, or do you make conscious changes to perfect your stroke? As an aside, about a year ago I spent two weeks working on this shot and got to where I made it 39 times in a row and scratched. I quit practicing however, and I am starting from scratch(make two, barely miss, make two, barely miss etc..) From what I remember, the last time I did this I made no conscious changes. When I started, I couldn't make it, two weeks later 39 times in a row. I'm just looking for opinions(conscious or subconscious). Sorry for the sloppy english.

Just put the balls closer together, and closer to the pocket too. It will be a lot easier and you won't have to adjust as often.

I used that drill every once in awhile. I also employ Bert5's suggestion to not take practice strokes, just setup, aim & fire. It's good test for me to see if my alignment is on. I just got a new-to-me Pool Table, I'll have the Mighty X on there real quick.

I like the follow Whitey into the pocket & draw the Cue Ball back into the diagonal pocket. I like it when my setup & stroke are calm...

To answer your question. At first you may want to make a conscious effort to make the shot. As you get better and better less conscious effort will be required, until none at all is required. Practice which ever way works best for you. I find I learn quicker with conscious effort but I am dedicated and not easily dissuaded. Some people find conscious effort too much like work and it takes the fun out of the game for them so they stop doing whatever it is needed and fail. Whatever works for you is what is right!
