APA handicap percentages

Where could I find the breakdown of the APA handicaps broken down by skill level percentages in 8 ball? I did a search here and couldn't find anything.

On a local level it looks like the bulk of the people are shooting in the SL2-SL-5 range and very few 6's and 7's. I wonder if that is the case nationwide.

thats an interesting question. i dont know how you could access the national data for that but i looked up the info on the 2 8 ball divisions i play in.

tue night. 77 players

s/l 2-3 29 players for 37%

s/l 4-5 36 players for 46%

s/l 6-7 12 players for 15%

sun night 61 players

s/l 2-3 29 players for 29%

s/l 4-5 31 players for 50%

s/l 6-7 12 players for 19%

i am curious about our other local divisions but can only access the ones i play in.

as you can see of the ones i accessed the majority fall into the 4-5 range.

I believe if you have no hcp and are a new player , they start you as a 4 so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that is probably the 'average' average acrossed the board.

Yep, but women start as SL3's (in APA 8-ball), so that may skew your figuring somewhat (heavy emphasis on "somewhat"). If there are a LOT of beginner women playing in a certain division, it would even out the beginner men SL4's.

I guess we could all ask Bola Ocho what HIS opinion is :sorry:!!

APA SUCKS IN ANY REGARD ... DOESN'T MATTER THE SL's .... SLOP POOL IS FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO GO OUT AND HAVE A FEW DRINKS WITH THEIR FRIENDS AND MAYBE PLAY A MATCH IF THE NUMBERS WORK .....

Yeah, just like 9-ball, or like that "open on the break" rule for suckers in 8. Do you play 1p with call-shot rules? Or any other game? Because I hear complaints like that a lot from people that couldn't max out their handicap even in a "slop" league.

Lorider - we are pretty close in our 8 ball league; although a slightly higher percentage 6-7's.

84 total players

SL 2-3: 31 or 37%
SL 4-5: 35 or 42%
SL 6-7: 18 or 21%

For 9 ball with 84 players:

SL 2-3: 33 or 39%
SL 4-5: 35 or 42%
SL 6-7: 13 or 15%
SL 8-9: 3 or 4%

Sounds like its being spoken by someone who is not good enough to beat the luck factor. But yes the league is for Amateurs to have fun.

I do agree at the local weekly level there are alot of drunken, belligerate players who cant run 3 balls and there is alot of slop pool. To make general statements that Apa sucks and that there are only social players who like to drink in the league is far from the truth.

At the national level singles events its very challenging. If you are a 6/7 you get put into a separate bracket that is seeded with lowest ranked player on top moving progressively down to the top ranked player at the bottom. If you are in that bottom tier its murderers row as the best by record 32 players in APA (all strong 7s) are bunched at the bottom with only one coming out of that bracket since if you lose you stay within your bracket and dont move up to the lower tiered players. Its an interesting twist to APA national singles in that by the time it gets down to the final four, the guy at the bottom has beaten out maybe 64 or 128 players who all play good and some great. Last year at both the 9 and 8ball events that guy who came out of the very bottom was strong shortstop/regional pro speed and he snapped it off.

APA always brings out the passionate naysayers who believe the league sucks and is full of drunk ballbangers. They have like 250k players though so if only 1% of the players are fully engaged and serious about their pool game, you still have 2500 players of which maybe half will make it to national singles.

To the OP, sometimes the local leagues have stats online that you can see generally what the player handicaps are. Here are the Miami rosters
http://dadecounty.apaleagues.com/Uploads/dadecounty/2011 fall session/roster 12-19.pdf

I dont know of any national level stats, but that would be an interesting thing for APA to do. It would be interesting to see where you rank in terms of win % among the national pool of a quarter million players.

I think these percentages are close to the national average sl 2 -5 make up around 70% of the league, with around 10% being 7's in 8 ball. I believe something was published a few years back with the break down of handicaps

I did this calculation sometime last year, for my division. Too tired at work right now to run the numbers again. But we had the majority being 4's, then 5's, 3's, 6's, 7's then 2's. As many 4's and 5's as the rest combined, Probly more.

A good under ranked 4 is gold in the APA...

I think this sounds about right, from what I remember our LO saying. That's also why they split the 4s and 5s up for the Singles Nationals in 8b. The 9b s/l's are probably a better representation of the numbers, looking closer to RobMan's list.

you are right about that. i am currently a 4 and i have had many an opponent tell me i am the best 4 they have ever seen and ask me to join their team lol.

problem is that i am inconsistent due to an injury. i have 30% disability in my right arm and hand. on nights when it feels ok i shoot like a 7 but on nights when it starts aching i shoot like a 3.

i think the lo thought i was sandbagging until he got to know me and learned of my disability. i now play on a team with him and he told me if i was more consistent i would be a 7 with no problem.

the captain of that team told the lo that i need to stay a 4 on that team but play as a 7 on my other team when i play against them lol.

to clarify, i play on that team on tue night but play on another team on sun night against them.

I have noticed that their equalizer system does have a few problems, but overall, usually works out very well. The regional level will not be equal to the national level. This is because certain areas may have a higher percentage of skilled players, Example: a 5 in NYC might be a 7 in another city. I have noticed when I've gone to APA Nationals a few times that a Skill Level x is hardly equal to that same Skill Level x from a complete different region.
I am a 5 in 9-Ball, and anyone who thinks I don't take the game serious or that I'm not completely in love with it is entitled to their opinion, but I can tell you
its really easy for people to stomp on others dreams and views online in their comfy chair behind their screen. But get out to the places these people that are serious about getting better play, and tell me they really don't care.
Disability does not leave you enough money to buy a table or be able to afford table time at several hours a day at a poolroom. Some of us dont have other leagues available to join, or may not have great instructors to correct their stroke, shot, position, etc.

I've taken one half-ass lesson and pretty much left it at that, since I didn't see justifying the cost vs. benefit, certainly not after the first one. As long as you pay attention to what you're doing(how you miss, what you miss, etc etc), just keep on chuggin along. In my first year of league, I got a kick out of 20-year players telling me that I'm doing it all wrong, only to pass them up shortly after. I've got it pretty good, though.. for the first few years, I was mainly playing on 50c barboxes.. but now I've gone next door for the 25c barboxes that are better maintained by the owner.

Speaking of.. time to leave work and get a few games in!

Enjoy your pool and enjoy your holidays!
