i have a friend who opened a pool hall after the original owner had to close it down. Now my friend is not really concerned about making money but also doesn't want to lose money either. He just opened it back up for the love of the game and because he likes the social aspect of the pool hall and the leagues.

Now he has a couple successful league nights involving teams, now i want to help him out and maybe try and get a single player league going one night for him, now does anyone play in a single player league and if so how is it structured? trying to help out a nice guy and a lover of pool.

I do actually, it's very successful too... 14.1 League @ The Illinois Billiard Club. Goto their website and call tge owner, Jim Parker. He will be glad to help you out with anything you need in that department, I'm certain of it.

Good advise, though I'm not sure how well the idea of a Straight Pool league will go over in Canada. I haven't heard of the game doing well there but really don't know for sure.

up here they play 8 ball or 9 ball and that's pretty much it and most have never even herd of 14-1,one pocket, banks and even 10 ball :( hope your american pool scene never gets as bad as ours.

8-9-10

I set up a small league in my single table room like this:

We played 8 ball, 9 ball, and 10 ball in each match.
2 games of 8 ball, each player broke one game
2 games of 9 ball, each player broke
2 games of 10 ball, each player broke

repeat this sequence until match is won

We set up handicaps according to known ability:

some matches were player A, needed to win 7 games before player D won 3 (that's A LOT of handicap); other matches were a spread like 7-7, -6, -5, etc.

We had a floating handicap system loosely based on the "Fargo Ratings" used by Mike Page at Fargo Billiards. If a player beat his opponent his "rating" went up, if you lost, your rating went down. We had 14 players in the league, scheduled as a round robin. The next league we played 14.1, it's still going on.

I have a 9 foot Diamond Pro Am with pro-cut pockets that we play on, so it's fine for 14.1, if you don't have big tables, you will probably have to stay with 8-9-10. Just set a league up however you want, players love to compete as individuals, just give them the opportunity, and they'll do it!

I played in a 8 & 9 Ball Singles League and won $460 for 1st place in 8 ball. I loved it. I think a cash pay out singles league is the best thing out there. It's hard to get a team together. So, singles will work better if you have a low population of players in the area. You may even think about a doubles league. Here in the USA, a lot of pool hall owners will offer free pool for slow days of the week for League Members. Some players play in the league just for the free pool days.
The key for you buddy is to get as many people in the doors because the profit is from beverage sales.

Very interesting okinawa77, I prefer playing by myself so the only one to blame for a loss is me, plus people just use different tactics in play. In your partner league was it trading shots for team members, or shoot till you miss?
