100 ways to level a pool table without a level

Yeah I do that all the time because of people just like you. Now go spend the rest of your life and try to level your table

You can't handle it. A wanna be trying to show off a level you don't even know how to use

Your rep will turn red if youre not careful

Ok Mr. Greeting card vendor turned expert. Enlighten me how to use my level. I guess in my 20 years as a machinist I never caught on. I'm all ears but I forgot, you have a secret proprietary method you don't want plagiarized.

Dude you seriously need medication.

First thing is you throw out that level. Get it

I know the small vial is way off. That has no effect on how I'm using it. I'm happy to listen to your wisdom on the matter. I also know that level is an overkill for a pool table but it's what I currently have. I'm never too old to learn though.

And to your original question. A table can be leveled close enough to play straight on just by rolling balls on the slate. I've seen that done more than twice.

You don't use a level like that on cloth period

If you want to show off with it you should have made a diagram like a chess board and entered your readings. At least then you would have a frame of reference

It wasn't sitting on the cloth but you can't see that from the angle I took the photos. It was sitting on shims just like in this picture of when I was actually starting to level the slate.

And I know 15 inches is too short to get an overall accurate picture of the level. I was just doing a quick recheck the next day. The whole table is sitting on commercial carpet anyway so any time you lean on it the level changes but not enough make the balls roll off.

A clear hose and water ? I know carpenters used that in the old days.

A balance beam of some sorts or precision drill rod ?

A plastic bottle with volume lines/indicators ?

2 machinists' square ?

Explain shims

Just what you see in the picture. Hardened steel discs of exactly the same thickness you can use where many use razor knife blades under your long level ends to find average level from point to point while keeping the level off the slate. They have enough mass to stay put well if you place them in a pattern around the slate so that you can move your long level setup back to known spots as you level the slates and easier to pick up and move around than a razor blade knife. If you look at the pictures you were making fun of this morning at the side pocket one you can see that
15" level is sitting on them and not on the cloth.

Bleach on one end, ammonia on the other end. No deadly chlorine gas... you're good!

The easiest way I've found to level a table is calling Mark Gregory. His deadly-chlorine-gas-free installation was an added benefit of hiring a pro.
