What do you think of this seam?

I just had this leather wrap put on by a local cue builder. Is this normal looking workmanship. I'm not happy. The guy did it for $50.00. What do you think?

I will not say who did the work, I just want some opinions.

Is there anything I can do to make it look better? Thanks.

Terrible.
I did this to my breaker last night.
I didn't even use dye or filler . Cheap leather piece too.
It can still get better.

Leather wrapping is one tough job until you really figure it out.

That's right if you pay $50 that's what you get. The leather will cost him almost what he charged you. It should be $100 and up!

Some wraps are easier to install than others, but I must say that that wrap is one of the easier. I could be wrong but Joey's wrap appears to be elephant ear, which I have found to be the easiest to do a great job on. I've not done many leather wraps (maybe 70 or so) so I'm still learning and learn something new on each wrap but it get's easier and quicker on every application. Normal embossed cow hide is usually the easiest and cleanest to install.

To do a good job the leather should be of a consistent thickness. I have a lot of trouble with leathers that are tanned to be very soft as they tend to be very stretchy. I would say that anyone doing wraps for 50.00 is either doing a bad job or losing money as they aren't being choosy enough in their leather blanks. I throw away about half the wraps that I buy as they aren't up to snuff in looks, thickness or consistent thickness.

There are some mechanics around whom I'm sure have an easier time and do better wraps than myself such as Steve Lomax and the rat as they have installed hundreds, if not thousands of wraps.

I'm not that wealthy Dick.
I don't put elephant ear on my breaker.
That's a cheap $6 leather.

Lomax and Ryan of RatCues do great wraps. Ryan is a hell of an old-school hands-on leather wrapper.
Kenny Koo, Dave Barrenbrugge and Mike Webb get my admiration too.

I'm not a cue maker....never even tried to do a leather wrap......and I think I could do better.

My guess is that's a chrome tanned, protected aniline, top grain leather. Cheap? Yeah, probably. But that is no excuse for the seam.

Lou, if you where not happy with it you should give the person that did the work a chance to correct it. If you are wanting conformation that it is a bad job you have it. I would rather try and make you happy then to loose your business. Please keep in mind though that if you want a great job the first time it will most likely cost upwards of $125. This person may not be able to give you what you want.

good luck, Jim.

Kenny Koo will wrap it to perfection. Gonna be a lot more than fifty bucks. I love his wraps and have never been less than totally impressed

He knew I was not happy when he handed it to me. His attitude was just as bad as his work. He just said something like Oh well there must have been something under the edge. No offer to make it right.

I did not know what to think as this is a first for me. I needed to hear from you guys what you thought.

The comments about me wanting perfection really don't help. I showed it to someone local and he could not believe the guy let it out of his shop looking like that. He quoted me the price, he should have given me something acceptable.

When you go to Burger King you have a right to get safe food and not get poisoned.

Sometimes I quote work for a lot less than I should, but that doesn't mean I do it half ass.

You already know you should have said something before paying for it. No real need asking anyone here if that work is substandard as it obviously is.

I'm not trying to be rude, but might suggest doing some research on pricing before you have someone work on your cue. As has been mentioned, you normally get what you pay for....

As for the Burger King reference, you shouldn't pay for a 2 minute cheeseburger and expect a filet mignon.

Thank you for your kind words sir:smile:. I would say if you are not happy with that wrap job you should give that cue repair/maker another chance to correct or reinstall another leather wrap for you.

If you pay shipping both ways, I'll put the same type of wrap on for free to help you out. I hate seeing someone get screwed...

Thank you. That is really amazing. I really appreciate it. I will give him another chance to make it right first.

My goal starting this thread was to find out if this workmanship was normal or really bad. I am surprised some of you chose to trash me and my judgement.
