Enco 13x40 lathe

Is 1500 rpm enough? Thanks

My lathes used to go 1500 rpm and there was very little that I couldn't do with less than the maximum rpms. I polish my shafts at 3600 rpm but I do them on a wood lathe as chances are good that a 6 inch chuck might explode at that rpm. There are a number of things easier done on a 100.00 wood lathe than a larger metal lathe.

I wouldn't try in in a jawed chuck at 3600, but collet chucks can be fine at that speed and above. I get nervous spinning my 6 jaw at 2k(it's max speed). I think 1500 is just fine.

I have two lathes with VFD's on them and when I replaced the motors to 3 phase I went from the 1740 to 3480 rpm which doubled the the lathes speed to 3000 rpm I keep the lathes at a lower belt speed so that I never attain those speeds. I have a J-2 collet system on the Jet lathe but once again, I never run it that fast.

Don't you love VFD's? I DO.

I didn't think much about them until I got one and then I couldn't see how I made it without one. I then out fitted the jet lathe the same way. Same with the quick change tool posts. I got one around 95 and now have them on all of my lathes and can't see how anyone can live without them but there are other cue makers in town who refuse to get them. I shimmed my tool posts so that all of my holders and tooling are interchangeable between lathes with no adjustments needed. I have about 35 tool holders in use Holding everything from a pencil to a dial indicator to 4 routers.
