Smoking at tournament matches

True story. You DON'T have to live in Louisiana if you don't want to. That's the beauty of being human. And Louisiana is going to run its weather in whatever way it wants...why don't you try banning rain?? See how far that gets you.

Sound ridiculous? That's what you sound like. You don't like rain? There are other places to live. You don't like smoking? There are other places to go.

Drew:

I was obviously being facetious -- the ridiculous nature of it was entirely intentional. And yes, I *knew* I was going to catch it for that one. But thank you for assuring me that my hunch was correct. ;)

Yes, I knew you were being facetious. And it was no more ridiculous than banning smoking (which you are dead serious about).

And you're welcome to go find some other air to breathe.

No thanks I'm fine here, but as a courtesy to you I'll go outside before I light up my "muscle relaxer". That's a courtesy you seem to be unwilling to extend to others.

Perhaps it's time to stop calling the so called "smoke police" fascists and extend that moniker to the smokers.

IF i am in a state or city that allows smoking i feel like i can play or not. It would be stupid to complain when i did not have to go there. But i do not agree that were its no smoking i have to wait for you to take a smoke break after a match has started. Tournament directors should have the guts to monitor smoking just like cell phones . Gambling is one thing tournaments are another.

Lol I love that. Just because I don't jump on the smoke police bandwagon, I must be a smoker with no regard for others, huh?

You can smoke whatever you like: cigarettes, weed, meth. I don't care. That's you're right as a human being. Just don't do it in my house...because that's my right as a human being.

i do not think the issue here is the rights of the individual person. the real issue of this topic should be the right of the pool hall to run his room as he wishes , within the law. if he wishes to run his room as a smoking establishment it is his right if the laws in his state permits.

as far as individuals are concerned, it is your choice as to whether to patronize that establishment or not. if you are a non smoker and you choose to go to a pool hall that allows smoking what right do you have to insist that there not be any smoking there ? about as much right as a smoker who chooses to go to a non smoking room and light up one, thats how much.

so why go to a place that you know allows smoking and then complain about it ?

Oh, my bad, I thought maybe you played in tournaments in Louisiana.

Which tournaments do you play in? (please include cities)

Joey,

I live in Colorado. We're lucky to even have tables to play on, let alone smoking/non-smoking. Colorado has a statewide ban on indoor smoking. 1 of the 2 rooms in Colorado Springs shut down about 3 years ago for a variety of reasons. The smoking ban ranks high on that list as regular customers started going to other places with patios. There is a room in Denver which found a way around the smoking ban (no alcohol in this joint). It is one of the busiest rooms in the state catering to the under 21 crowd.

I have a feeling your question is loaded, but I'll bite. I don't play in any big tournaments. They're just too far away, especially for a B+/A- player with very little chance of winning. The last decent tournament I played was a $1000 added in Albuquerque. Before that, I played a $500 added in Ft. Collins. Every once in awhile, I'll play in the weekly 8/9/10ball tournaments at Felt in Denver. Half the time, I'd rather gamble than sit around waiting for matches all day.

Ah another awesome smoking thread!

Have we had "this privately owned business is PUBLIC because it's open to the public!", "You're being selfish for not catering to me!", "Go somewhere else? But...that would require thinking!", "health codes for food totally apply to smoking!" and the classic "think of the children in the bar!" posted yet?

These threads are always so entertaining.

Yes, Drew, the question was loaded. Thanks for being honest and I will be candid as well.

The discussion about smoking during a tournament match is best discussed by those who actually play in tournaments and who find smoking during a match a distraction to the game or not.

Other people's opinions are nice to hear but unless you regularly play in tournaments, you don't have the personal experience to say whether or not the smoking is a distraction to the match or a delay to the tournament.

The tournaments in Colorado that you occasionally attend do not allow smoking of any kind, let alone during a match.

Hell, even some of the amateur pool leagues won't allow the members to smoke at the tournament table even if smoking is allowed by law in that state.

I thought that you might not face the problem of smoldering cigarettes sitting in an ashtray or opponents, blowing smoke toward the pool table while you are shooting, or making "CONVENIENT" arm and hand movements to reach for a cigarette or cigarette lighter while you are at the table bearing down on a shot. It was just a guess but I'm glad you were honest enough to admit it.

Peace,
JoeyA

BECAUSE, as a customer, you have a right.

Most SMART business people would like to know what their customers are really thinking.

MOST smart business owners are continually trying to find ways to make their establishment MORE ATTRACTIVE to a wider group of potential customers.

MOST smart business owners are looking to make their establishment more efficient.

The elimination of smoking BY THE PLAYERS, DURING A POOL MATCH is not going to do anything except, SPEED UP THE TOURNAMENT and please the majority of the people who like playing in pool tournaments.

Not enough

Hey Joey, I started a smoking rant a few days ago while you were away at a pool tourny that you didnt invite me to:rolleyes:

How about we blow some stinky a$$ fart the smokers way:grin:

Farts won't get the job done because it won't stick to their skin, clothing, hair and lung tissue.

We must pull down our pants and shit a drizzly diarrhea stream on them from head to toe including inside of their mouth, nose and ears. Of course unlike smoke, this will come off with a shower and some mouthwash so we're still lacking to return the favor but it's a start.

[...]

Actually they will, if they are particularly methane-rich. Keep your distance, for the next time they light up... BOOM!

Have you ever heard the science behind smelling a fart? The airborne shit molecules attach themselves to your olfactory nerve sensors inside your nose and sit there and melt like a snow flake.
