Many people don’t realize the importance or understand the difference between different sets of balls. There are several qualities that you want a good set of billiard balls to have and the differences can have an impact on the precision of your pool game.
1. Balance- balls that are not made of a phenolic resin can be off balance. Having a balanced ball is the key to straight rolls and precision play.
2. Construction- Many ball manufactures also use plugs on both sides of the balls for numbers. Quality ball manufactures like Aramith use a solid core that runs all the way through the ball making it much less resistant to damage.
3. Elasticity- having a ball that comes off the rail or another ball the same every time regardless of where the ball is struck is key to great position play. A set of balls that is not high quality will rebound in different ways depending on where the ball was struck.
4. Surface- Less expensive balls often use fillers to ensure a smooth round surface. The fillers often create high friction between the two surfaces leading to a burn marks or white marks on the cloth and friction marks on the balls.
Considering that pool balls are an investment that should last you many years. Invest in a good set of balls, you won’t regret it.
