5 point full splice?

For those who asked for photos, here you go. As someone mentioned it was done with CNC.

Thank you Monstermash for the pics. nice job and it does clarify this issue. i've noticed that you have cut the points after you bored the wood, then installed the core. i am curious, can you get the same effect without boring the wood? i am more of a traditionalist in that full splice means joining 2 solid pieces of wood but, as Chris pointed out, new meanings are being applied to old terms. so it would seem the answer to the original question on 5 points is-- NO in the traditional sense of building but YES in the modern technique and terms. again, thanks for the pics. its nice to see the wonderful talent you cnc guys have.

Thank you, but the credit goes to Paul Drexler. I wish I had the talent to do this! :p

I'm not 100% but I would think this couldn't be achieved without boring the wood. The cut would need to be very deep and I don't think that can be done with the CNC but I could be wrong.

I do agree with you that I personally like the traditional splice as well. However with that said I think the trend has been heading towards many of the better (if not all) cuemakers adding cores for stability. At least with the non full-spliced cues.

Paul is on vacation but will be back on Monday. I have to visit him next week so I'll be sure to ask him.

I had a Drexler 5 point full splice. It was one of my all time favorite hitting cues. I sold it after I had an injury and didn't know when/if I'd ever play again. It was one of those cues I'll always regret letting it go. It was sweet!

He will still make you another one!

hello again monstermash, thanks for the pics anyway. i'd tend to think that would be tuff to do without the core as well. i did kind of chuckle on your statement about "better" cuemakers moving towards cores. i mean no offense, its just that paul stopped by my booth at the SBE a couple of times and he really liked my "old style" butterflies (and i don't core as a rule). if you see paul, ask him about the butterfly guy that was next to Nitti. i have cored a rosewood burl and walnut burl that i didn't get stabilized.

Here is a 21 inch full splice 3 way curly into red palm with snakewood and curly accents, that i did last year.done without a coring dowel.

bill.

I was actually at SBE this year and stopped by your booth a few times myself. I really liked the half butterfly/half regular full splice cues you had. They were very cool.

Don't get me wrong about my statement regarding the "better" makers coring their cues. I'm not really referring to full splice cues, but more of the short splice, CNC pointed, or PJ cues. Although I have heard that Ed Prewitt cores his full splices as well. I would be interested to know if Travis from Blackcreek cores his full splices. Although I will never buy one, he does do an exceptional job on his full splices.

monstermash, glad you liked the old syle. i'm bad with names so if you told me i've forgot, sorry. in any case , i didn't take you wrong at all. i pretty much knew what you were referring to. it was just one of those funny things to read.
