Shooting off the rail

SkiCop:
Good luck shooting a level cue off the rail. It's what I call "unpossible."

I disagree. You can shoot with an almost dead level cue if you have a good tip and keep the tip as close to the rail as possible, even brushing it. I've been doing it his way for longer than I care to admit.
The top of the rail (not the cushion nose) is higher than the level-cue miscue limit, so you have to hit at least a little downward to avoid miscueing (and probably a little more downward than that to be comfortable).

Hitting off the rail with speed is the hardest thing - you have to jack up a little extra and avoid even the tiniest offcenter hit. If you have to spin the CB you might have to compensate for swerve rather than squirt (i.e., adjust your aim in the opposite direction).

I may be elevating more than I realize but I try to keep it as level as possible. I know when I see the weaker players jack up about 30 degrees, they're gonna miss by a mile.

Might be time to get out the camera and see how close to level I really am. More later...

Pj...depends on the table. I had an Olehausen that had flat rails.

True, and the rubber is mounted at a different angle - the top surface doesn't slope downward as much as a GC. But it does slope some, so the flat rail is still a little higher than the cushion nose. I think you might just be able to successfully hit the CB on an Olhausen with the bottom surface of the stick (but not the center axis) level.

I've always liked this about Olhausens.

I've got some drawings of the difference that I might be able to find...
